Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

High tide's right around the approximate landfall time too - only about a foot and a half rise there, but that could still be critical. They just can't catch any kind of break. Of course, if the surge hits 30 ft, the tide's kind of a moot point.

We're interested in this as well. Remember, we're freepers first. But, that last thread was so terrible, it's taking two of us to moderate it. Just remember all the work NautiNurse has done.

I wonder why sea salt?

Isn't that hard on the filter and pump?

Or do they have a special type of system.

What about bacteria levels in a salt public pool?

Well, salt is sodium chloride, so in a way, it's just another way to chlorinate. I'm at the border of my knowledge here, but I'd imagine they have some kind of sand filter (just like my backyard pool has) to trap most of the particulates (bacteria, etc). I think they just pipe ocean water into their pool systems. Cruise ships also have salt water pools, not chlorinated pools.

"I'm in Massachusetts and I'm transfixed with this storm. Prayers for all of the folks on the Gulf."

Ditto on both counts.

I'm in NY, but I've been to New Orleans and have some affiliation to it. It's a beautiful city with some incredibly rich history. Really, so is the entire area.

Tonight, there are no blue states or red states. No matter what our political leanings, we're all Americans.

Gonna also be the potential of severely heightened disease risk afterward if the chemical plants are penetrated and leach benzene and other carcinogens :

Katrina may be 'our Asian tsunami'

"Floodwaters from the east will carry toxic waste from the "Industrial Canal" area, nicknamed after the chemical plants there. From the west, floodwaters would flow through the Norco Destrehan Industrial Complex, which includes refineries and chemical plants, said van Heerden, who has studied computer models about the impact of a strong hurricane for four years.

"These chemical plants are going to start flying apart, just as the other buildings do," he predicted. "So, we have the potential for release of benzene, hydrochloric acid, chlorine and so on."

That could result in severe air and water pollution, he said."

====================================

Dr. Gardner on FNC was also saying how much really dangerous infection will spread from the dead animal and human bodies on which the flies will be feeding. This is worse than a horror movie. Prayers for quelling the seas and wind and protection of the fearful thousands awaiting this storm.

The ones that I have seen happen fast...not like a tsunami, more like when you are standing at the beach and a wave kind of slowly comes up around you and all of the sudden it's up to your shoulders instead of your kneecaps like you thought.
