If it was in contraflow, it wasn't done well. The traffic cam shots all day and into the night showed half of I-10 full and the other half nearly empty.

I live in New Orleans. No one should wait around for a government official, local or otherwise, to advise him on how to take care of his family. We left Saturday morning, no problem, after watching the Friday night news.

They'll still blame Bush for it, though.

Yeah, Jeb Bush had no business letting that hurricane get past Florida...

The federal government is delegated the power to govern interstate and international commerce. Interstate and international shipping can't be reliable without the best possible weather observations and forecasts.

The constitutional status of FEMA is a bit more dodgy.

Come on, just because their poor doesn't mean they're clueless. They know the hurricane is coming & they don't need the government forcibly evacuating them.

The history of the NWS traces back only to the 1890s, a former division of the Army. Just another worthless agency from the Progressive era. And if you'll note, one that is becoming used less by weather forecasters as private companies are moving into the arena. Get rid of it

It's up the the citizen to get himself out of the line of the storm.

That the Mayor is an idiot has little bearing on the fact that it's up to the individual to protect himself.

you are ABSOLUTELY right!! I was thinking along the same lines! If the scientists are right, every car and boat etc.. will be wasted by morning anyway so why not just start passing out the car keys, the feds only job should have been to order buses, planes, trains etc, from neighboring states to rush to N.O. and ship people out of there for free and the fed should foot the bill to house these people in some sort of refugee camp till things were safe. This is what I ASSUMED was the "hurricane planning" that these ocean side states had up their sleeves in case anything this catastrophic happened.

The LAST thing we need is FEDERAL CONTROL over anything.
---

The only thing the Federal government should be able to do is act to strike down tyrnnical state governments, in other words it should posses 'negative power', not positive power (doing things).

Once again, it's 36 years not 43 and you have touched on why you don't want the federal govt to handle any hurricane disaster -- FEMA. They knew how to hand out the money but they did not know our state very well.

I worked in a church that served as a comfort station for weeks after the storm. We handed out food, clothing, water, tarps for damaged roofs, and we housed people without places to stay in one of our church buildings. We made arrangements through our county to provide this service. FEMA gave us some supplies, but we were set up to perform this task on a local level.

There were fed govt people who came into the state who knew nothing about our state and they caused more problems than they solved. Barely a drop of rain landed on Miami from the four hurricanes we had last year. Yet, some people in Miami had the nerve to file claims and FEMA felt obliged to pay them. FEMA officials are still trying to reclaim some of that money.

The people who really needed help were not always able to obtain help from FEMA and those who did not need help at all took advantage of FEMA's lack of understanding.

I know my neighbor and if I have the resources, I can help them better than any stranger. When it comes to dealing with state problems, the state is better able to understand what to do than the federal govt. Any state that cannot take care of its own problems needs a new set of officials.

And yes, it is communistic to suggest that a distant govt is better able to organize local assistance.

My neice and her family left Slidell Sunday morning at 4:30AM, took the back roads out and were in Jackson Miss. at 8:30AM getting ready to cut across up to northwestern La. where they own property and an RV, they were convoying three king cab trucks. They packed their trucks Sat. People with intelligence know how to plan and take care of themselves, people who depend on someone else, ie a mayor, to take care of them, deserve what they get.

You mean a states "right" to shriek and scream for federal tax dollars to rebuild a city below sea level?

They gave 48 hours. It was all over the newspapers. Let's not get crazy with the "Oh, poor me, no tv bs." The Mayor did the best he could and came on TV before President Bush!
