Regarding he evacuation: I hope the cops are trying to speed up the head of the column as much as possible. The cars should be moving away from the storm as fast as possible, even if they have to go 80 MPH. Wreckers should be in place to get cars out of the way as fast as possible in case of piles ups.

"The oystercam has been looted. "

If you're talking about the one at Acme, it's still there. I just looked, and it shows the stools upside down on the counter. Funny, I sat in one of those stools not a year ago...

So sad.

I think that you make a valid point. However, this storm did kind of explode overnight. It seems to me that last night it was a cat3 and not nearly as large. Maybe the NWS should have seen that coming, I do not know. But, better safe than sorry.

I was thinking Friday night that if I lived in NO that I would be packing up and leaving Saturday morning.

That's huge at 40 miles diameter -- Camille's eye was something like 15 miles diameter. Normally as they gain strength, the eye shrinks. This one is moving serious amounts of air.

Are they still predicting a direct hit on New Orleans?

I've been dealing with some serious stuff here and haven't been able to keep up with the news.

Thanks. That was another poster's question but your info agrees with the Boat windfield chart.

Not a good idea to ride it out in the Dome.

Even the guy in charge of the Super Dome said last year that he did not know if it could handle 130 mph winds.

Yeah, but high ground in Cuba is a LOT closer to shore than it is in Nawlins.

Well, you know one thing, the Cafe du Monde will not close their doors. They don't have any.

I start my morning with Cafe du Monde coffee EVERY day.

I rode out Hurricane David in 1979 off of Charleston as well as going through many hurricanes in eastern NC while growing up. Prayers for everyone in the path of this one. This is going to be one for the books.

They aren't stopping the evacuations, just the flow direction?? That means they only had 24 full hours to exit with the contraflow. Great plan.

This I will NEVER understand. Never.

Emergency services coming from up north.
Power companies sending crews, Red Cross people, Salvation Army people, National Guard people.
Gotta get emergency disaster folks into town and they can't do that with both lanes going one way.
That's my theory.

I do believe that you meant Esplanade Ave. and not Elysian Fields Ave. Elysian Fields goes out to the lake. Esplanade passes the racetrack and ends, more or less, at City Park. I lived on Grand Route St. John which intersects Esplanade and is right next to the track. I could hear them call the races from my back stairs. :-)
