A culinary concoction at a North Side Chicago beef stand came under fire Tuesday as some say it's name, Ghetto Fries, is politically incorrect. The fries are thinly sliced potatoes smothered in Italian beef gravy, BBQ sauce, onions, cheddar cheese, and hot peppers.
Some customers at Max's Italian Beef at 5754 North Western Avenue have raised their eyebrows at the name.
Other customers say they don't have a problem with it.
The owner says that the fries were named after the employee who came up with the combination. He says it was the employee's nickname, and it was done in fun.

HA!!! very nice!
Howdy GSC from the Hoosier State.
Jay Leno is not my favorite as far as comedians go, but, one time long ago he had the best joke ever in his monologue. Believe it or not it relates to this above news story.
Leno said that the NBA's 'Washington Bullets' were going to change their team's name, because it offended so many people. Why? The connotation of crime was what made it so offensive.
So from then on they were going to call themselves just 'The Bullets'!
Man I remember going to English class at my high school, a Catholic, upper-middle class, all male place, the likes of which are now extinct.
And of course we had this old hippy English teacher who kept on trying to guilt-trip us with songs like this. He would play it on the crappy AV department RCA suitcase-type crackling record player. We had to analyze this song in particular as if it were literature. Of course, our analysis was not complete until we had come up with reasons why and how it was OUR fault that the ghetto babies kept popping out of the moms in the King's song.
We gagged on this nonsense silently, later, most of us going on to become FR-type rednecks like me in the professions.
The circle of life: My son now goes to a similar school, and the teachers are still making him and his classmates listen to the same Kum-ba-yah stuff and read THE SAME feculant paperbacks like Catcher in the Rye, etc.
My son and his friends gag on it just as we did. They keep their mouths shut because they know someday they have to earn a living with a degree or a diploma of some type. But they resent having to suffer in silence at the attempted brainwashing.
There is real hope for the nation, in that this next generation of kids are very conservative. IMHO.
PS I really like the song, though.
Regards
Damn I love that place.
Like mine hot and wet (mmm hot and wet).
Guess I'm un PC for referring to my old neighborhood (now the very hot Ukrainian Village) as "the Ghetto".
I don't know where you are in NY but Red Robins abound and, for a chain, they make a pretty good cheeseburger. The Mushroom burger with swiss and steak fries is 8.95 and I think it's worth it.
Eek, a chain? Well, anything (almost) for a good burger. I think we took this place public back in the early '90s. Or were about to, at least. In Manhattan?
The only thing I find offensive is that combination of ingredients.
'Ghetto Fries' : A culinary concoction at a North Side Chicago beef stand came under fire Tuesday as some say it's name, Ghetto Fries, is politically incorrect. sometimes it's more fun to "misunderstand". But I don't they would come from the Jewish ghetto.

1. Get the hell out of Times Square.
2. Get yourself to Joe's, John's, Grimaldi's, Catania, Arturo's, etc. I can give you directions if you wish. Better yet, hop on the R down to Bay Ridge and try any of the pizzerias along 3rd Avenue. Vesuvio's is my favorite.
The problem with you transplants is that you go to the same crappy places as the tourists and that you never leave Manhattan (Williamsburg and Park Slope don't count).
Good advice!
I've not been to NY in years, but I can do that in the Detroitarea , and when I travel, I can almost ALWAYS find a good cheap place to eat...
I'm going to Chicago with my daughter next summer, and plan to sniff around to find food.
I can hardly wait!
Had a hankering for Gene and Jude's this weekend...
Many years ago, there was a chain of burger restaurants in NYC, "Brew Burger" I think, that had pretty good burgers, along with all the beer you wanted. It was pretty good, but that was back around 1980 or so. I've got a feeling that things may have changed in 25 years.

What about store-front Chinese? the good cheap kind that makes you crazy smelling it til you get it home or to the office to get into it?
Well, he did specifically say "Burger." Sometimes, nothing else will do.

Only a black restaraunt would be allowed to call them "ghetto fries" just like when blacks use the "N" word, it is perfectly OK. Just look at all of the rappers that use the "N" word and nobody says anything about it.
At Dixon's Chili in KC, they have ketchup, but you have to order it, they look at you funny, and they "fine" you for it. I think they charge you .25 for a little ramakin of it.

A tranplanted Texan once told me that if I added ketchup to his chili, that I'd wind up in his next batch!
