EDTA...As I recall, we used that as a buffering agent in chem class. Well, something when we were doing quantitative analysis.

A 5-year-old Monroeville boy died this week during a medical treatment that's being touted by some as a cure for autism.

Sounds like a pretty extreme cure.
No more so than a certain popular pregnancy cure though I guess.

Autistic kids' parents are notorious for seeking out quacks, from Robert Kennedy Jr, to this phony.

EDTA is FDA approved for pediatric use. It's highly unlikely the boy died from EDTA if they were watching his creatinine.

I've heard of this treatment being used to treat heart disease (by "Roto-Rootering' the arteries). Sounds like snake oil.

They were probably trying to get the mercury out. Thanks Imus.

We have repeatedly used EDTA chelation treatment for my autistic son. It is not quackery nor is it some miraculous treatment for autism.

Autistic children often have high levels of heavy metals in their bloodstream and hair. This can be measured and is certainly not quackery. It's there in as many as 90% of autistic children according to studies I have read. Where it comes from, I don't know.

We vaccinated and my son loves fish so maybe that's where it came from. We've cut out tuna, swordfish, mackerel, etc. Yet the mercury levels still continue to be elevated. Some doctors speculate that an inability to excrete heavy metals from the body is somehow part of the autistic presentation.

So, over the years we have done chelation. Not because we expect it to cure autism but because high levels of mercury are bad and can impair cognitive development.

We do many treatments aimed at improving my son's physiological symptoms. Leaky gut is a serious problem, related to yeast infections, and tackling that problem did result in miraculous improvements in our son.

The treatment is becoming increasingly popular, though still controversial, for autism.

Why? What's the suggested rationale? Clever name?
