U.S. civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr., condemned calls by conservative Christian Coalition leader Pat Robertsons to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
These comments are morally reprehensible and dangerously suggestive. The international community repudiates Robertsons remarks, and calls upon him to retract his remarks, Jackson said in a press release.
Calling for the assassination of world leaders is inciteful and wildly provocative. It is just the latest of Robertsons outrageous and intemperate declarations; President Bush and Secretary of State Rice should immediately rebuke and disassociate the administration from Robertsons comments, Jackson continued.
Robertson said in his Monday television show that if he [Chavez] thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it... It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
Reverend Jackson reminded that Presidents Ford and Reagan previously issued executive orders banning political assassinations. In October, the White House was forced to deny Robertsons claim that the president told him there would be no casualties in the Iraq invasion. Earlier this year, Robertson was harshly critical of judges and Supreme Court rulings that he disagreed with, noting that judicial activists represented a greater threat than terrorists, he added.
During a State Department hearing Robertson declared, 'Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom (the State Departments headquarters) to shake things up.' He has also made inflammatory remarks about Muslims and the Islamic religion, saying, 'It's clear from the teachings of the Quran and also from the history of Islam that it's anything but peaceful.' Yet, Robertson never raised his voice against racial segregation in the South. He did not join the chorus of witnesses to free Mandela. He instead became a mining trading partner with the tyrant Mobutu in the Congo, Jackson continued.
Jackson called the Bush Administration, Christian conservatives, and the international community to condemn this history of despicable remarks from Christian Coalition leader Robertson.
His rhetoric, especially if taken to their conclusion, only undermines international diplomacy and dialogue, and has no place in todays world, the Reverend concluded.
Je$$e$ branching out now. He's franchising down to Latin America.

</Yawn> Who cares.
He said it. The video is available on the web from multiple places -- http://thepoliticalteen.net/2005/08/23/robertson/ is a conservative source for it.

Hey Jesse , Why doncha fly me down to hymietown ?
Close enough. Dumb thing to say but hardly something that needs to be turned into a federal case.
As usual Jesse saw a camera and lost his mind. The most dangerous place in the world is to get between Jesse Jackson, Chuckie Schumer and a camera.
So sayeth Jessie Jackass.
Well, I always went against the tide and Jessie, so let me say thus:
Assassinate Chavez.
Then lets's assassinate Bin Laden.
Then we can work on some of the stinking Saudis.
Then we can move on some of the other useless pieces of human excrement, such as Mugabe or Kofi.
Somehow I just don't think it's a good idea for us to tolerate religious leaders calling for assassination of political figures.
Jesse is once again proving he never learned to understand subjunctive mood.
This is actually a reading test. Those who understand subjuntive mood (usually found in English in sentences beginning "if" or "when") know that Robertson did not suggest Chaves be assassinated.
Those who slept through Freshman English, as well as their Spanish language classes, don't have a clue and make remarkably ignorant statements as a consequence.
Who dusted this old fool off and told him to bother the rest of us with his jackassery?
"I'm thinking to myself, if we were in other countries, we would all, right now, all of us together, all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death.""
I don't remember JJ or any of the dems up in arms about that one.
The Liberals, though, let it pass because they thought he was serious.
Nothing you can say or do will ever convince me any Liberal can understand subjunctive mood.
The word is in there, but it's in an "IF CLAUSE", if you know what I mean!
Don't let the Liberals know there are also Conservatives who don't understand subjunctive mood.
I'll tell you what, include Sharpton and Farrakhan and we'll do them all together! ;)
Build their gallows high
