The San Francisco Chronicle brings us a report today on a group which has launched a boycott against Target California Consumers United is running a $50,000 ad campaign against Target which piggybacks on Target's recent efforts to reach out to seniors and working class families. They are doing this because of the large amount of money that has been contributed to California Governor Schwarzenegger. The article reports at least $660,000 in donations to Schwarzenegger and political causes associated with Schwarzenegger. This kind of money is very hard to track so the real number might be different.
Target also contributed 83% of their $212,000 in contributions during the 2003-2004 election cycle to Republican candidates.

We suggest you contact Target and voice your opinions on the matter. You can find email, phone and fax contact information on our web site here. You can also post the letters you send and discuss this with other readers.
Buy Blue wants you to only shop at stores that donate to Democrats; we should do the contrary.
I got peeved at Target when they refused to allow the Salvation Army to solicit, prior to Christmas, so haven't shopped there for awhile. I do like their garden center here, so will put them back on my list of okay places to shop.
Liberals can take comfort in the fact that Target doesn't permit those pesky Salvation Army bell ringers near their establishments. Wouldn't want to chance the religion rubbing off on the young'uns.
I will be shopping at Target more often.
Wasnt it the salvation army they wouldnt donate to?
Im getting tired of keeping track of who gives to what
After folding on the Salvation Army thing, I don't buy there anymore either. I much prefer Home Depot who have sent supplies to the troops in Iraq.
I will be doing a lot of shopping at target this year.
Not I! After that dust-up with the SA (the only charity I donate to) they lost me. As for donating to the Republicans, I received a fund raising letter yesterday from Elizabeth Dole asking for $ for the Rep. Senate Commitee. I sent it back empty today with the note,"Not 1 cent until the borders are sealed."
Strange, on Buy Blue, Citgo (Venezuela's gas stations here in the U.S.) is marked deep red.
Targets only point of brand recognition for me is that it is the single store that is worse than Wal-Mart at hiding that it is an outlet for slave produced Chinese goods.
I wouldnt be surprised in the least to find that all of the donations went to transnational progressive globoliberal "free trade" RINOs.
Target Corporations Position on Solicitation at Stores
Target Corporation has a long-standing no solicitation policy at all of our stores. Like many nationwide retailers, Target Corporation implemented this policy in order to be consistent with all the groups that request access to our stores and to provide our guests with a comfortable, distraction-free shopping environment. Therefore, Target Corporation restricts the use of its parking lots and facilities to only business use. Target does not permit individuals (including political candidates and/or their campaign organizations) or nonprofit organizations to solicit donations, distribute literature, sell merchandise or hold events on our premises.
Well, my local Target seems to like putting Bush-bashing titles in prominent places in their book section.
Ping - to the above post
Life is tough, the rest of make value-judgments every day. It's called living. We don't throw up our hands and say "Horrors. Different people are advocating different things. We can't support all values so we'd better not support any." But that's exactly the logic of the Target decision. We can't allow SA to solicit because then we'll have to let in the PETA people, the satanists, etc. Wal-mart has gone out on a limb and decided that Salvation Army provides valuable community services and is run with scrupulous honesty. Because of that, they allow the SA bell-ringers while saying no to lots of other groups who would like access to the same Wal-mart customers. Bully for Wal-mart!
What Moosilauke said in #14.
Life's tough. I donate on my own, I don't need panhandlers to give to whom I want.
