Televangelist calls for Chavez' death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Look. Pat Robertson is getting old. I don't agree with everything he has said over his lifetime, but he has a right to say whatever the heck he wants and no, he is not going to be completely aware of who he's irritating at whatever moment. If any of you have ever been with or listened to a senior citizen, you know that they no longer care what is PC and what is not. Give the guy a break.

So I guess Jesus would just grab an Uzi and take of business?

Only if he could pass all the background checks, pay his $200 Class III tax, and wait 6 months.

"I will tell you something. Pat is a representative of Jesus Christ."

You make a lot of good points. However, it is my opinion that Christians are not required to refrain from fighting evil. War can be just. Is political assassination as an instrument of war, then, always unjust?

In WWII we read a Japanese message that told us where Isoroku Yamamoto was going to be, and sent planes specifically to shoot him down and kill him. Is this objectionable?

The ruling class, of course, would love to see political assassination placed out of bounds, but is that in the best interests of humanity?

Fighting a pussy politically-correct war against Islam, terrorists and any other forces of evil will do us in.

Rev. Robertson realizes this and so do some on this forum.

Absolutely! I agree that some wars are just--and somethings done in war are nessesary.

My point is that Pat Robertson is a Christian pastor and leader. His job, given to him by the Lord, is to bring people to Christ. His job is the salvation of souls. Calling for the killing/murder of a person is not his job! It hurts his job. Why not instead, as a Christian leader call for prayers against Chavez; why not ask his listeners to pray that God would remove him? God keeps the man's heart beating, and nothing is too difficult for him to do.

Pat needs to stick to the job God gave him, and leave the defense of this country to those God gave that job to!

"Pat needs to stick to the job God gave him, and leave the defense of this country to those God gave that job to!"

A lot of people seem to have no problem with, "Yes, it's true, but he shouldn't have said it," situations, but I find them very difficult to cope with.

...."Why would God bother to create these persons"....

God sees the beginning, middle, and end, because He is timeless. He knows who has accepted Him and who rejects Him, You name is either in the Book of Life or it isn't. People are either His or they are damned. That is hard for people that live by a calendar to accept. The Bible says the saved are already in heaven with Jesus. Well, I haven't even died yet, so that is hard for us to comprehend. He knew my name from the foundation and I was His. Some will never be saved, but it is my job to preach the Gospel anyway. Some will come, others will never come. We are dead until the Holy Spirit revives us. These questions you have can be answered if you seek the Spirit's guidance. He is your teacher. I could spell it out 100 times and if you are dead to God, you will never get it. Your answers are all in the Bible, but most people don't get past the "Cliff's Notes". The Bible is as easy as you want, or as difficult as rocket science and quantum theory. All you need is faith to be saved, but most don't even have that. The whole world was condemned in the Garden, so EVERYONE was doomed to hell. Our God, Your Father, loved you so much, He gave you a way for redemption. You can take it or leave it, but He already knows your answer and has known it since before He made the Earth. That's why we call Him "God".

Just because Robertson IS a Christian, he can't speak his mind?

He didn't call for the assassination on an interview with Fox news, it was on the 700 club. _He_ was using his Christian broadcasting program, and the audience he has as a religious leader to call for the assassination of Chavez. By issuing his fatwa in that forum, it was Pat who mixed his violence with his Christianity. I'm certain he doesn't speak for Christians in general, but it's Pat who's trying to associate himself, and his fatwa, with Christianity by the forum he chooses.

While I agree with Pat about assassination of deserving individuals, I don't really think Chavez fits into the mold of someone deserving of assassination. Chavez may be a lousy leader that can't get his country out of strikes, and that sort of thing. I haven't seen any reports that he is murdering or torturing anyone, or throwing hundreds into prison. It essentially looks like his real guilt lies in the fact, that he refuses to do what the US wants him to do.
