VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.
Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."
Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."
Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.
Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.
Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.
Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.
"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.
"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
Not too unlike some mullahs.
Do you honestly believe that Cuba wants to go to war with us?
OF course we should kill Chavez. But we shouldn't freakin announce it! Didn't Robertson also say that 9/11 was a punishement from God for gay "rights"? He is truly unhinged.
"Chavez is a blowhard with, granted, some serious power. But there are a variety of ways to destablize his government, because frankly he is nothing but a blowhard without the power of his government to back him up. Assassination is neither necessary nor politically expedient."
I agree....but we have been out of the assassination bidness for too long and we are rusty. Taking out Chavez would be a good tune up.
BTTT!
Just send Helen Thomas over there to "romance" him. And while she's there, announce that Dick Cheney is running for President. That should take care of both of them.
Chavez has ties to drug dealers, money laundering organizations and is actively engaged in state-sponsored terrorism.
You said: Good grief. And if he were of a different faith calling for a jihad, you'd be right behind that too, or is it that only Christians have the right to demand the deaths of others?
Of course, if he were of another faith calling for a jihad, the media would support him.
Not only that...it gives the media something else to focus on besides Able Danger.
Touche'.
How can you even pretend to make moral equivalence between rabid jihadists waging a death campaign across the globe and advocacy of the assassination of a rising star in the ranks of Earth's tyrants?
Since when is the mere idea of knocking of a budding oppressor anywhere near comparable to the acts of those roving the glob beheading people who don't believe in their god?

You do well to cower in abject fear of the many mobs of anarchist Christians flooding the streets of your city.
Just stay inside. We'll tell you when the coast is clear.

Thank you, Pat Robertson, for doing the un-PC thing and stating the blatantly obvious.
If Pat's so concerned about terrorists why is he such buddies with Charles Taylor In Liberia?
And why did Pat agree with the one child rule enforced by the loathesome ChiComs if he hates Commie dictators so much?
What would Jesus do? He would focus on preaching the Gospel in Venezuela and everywhere else, and He would only denounce/rebuke you (not threaten to kill you) if you were A) an unrepentant sinner, or B) a wolf in sheep's clothing misleading and making merchandise of the flock like Pat Robertson.
Sorry, but Pat Robertson brought religion into this. As for a literal interpretation of "live - die by the sword," that is spoken like a true fundamentalist jihadist issuing a fatwa, certainly NOT a Christian. Even as hyperbole and dramatic statement it can still be misinterpreted and used to promote the secular humanist culture war.
End of story? We have enough problems with secular humanists such as the ACLU already; we don't need extremist statements and dead-weight "Christians" who claim to speak for all of us to feed the burgeoning anti-religious frenzy and agenda!
I get so tired of the "what would Jesus do" stuff. That's thrown around as if Jesus was a weak man. That's the mantra of the left. Remember the person who stood up at a Clinton/Bush debate and asked "can't we all just get along?" It's a 60's mindset.
In all due respect to Pat Robertson, he should concentrate on doing what he's done best for decades: spreading the Christian message to the masses.
