CNN) -- Gas prices surged 20 cents over the past three weeks to an all-time high of $2.50 per gallon of self-serve regular, according to a national survey.
The price surge "does smash the all-time record high for the third time this year," Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey, said Sunday.
"Crude oil has caused this jump at the pump," she said of the survey, taken August 12 at about 7,000 gas stations in every state.
"And even at the current record-breaking pump prices, gasoline demand, while not galloping, is still growing."
Oil prices rose to record highs of $67 a barrel Friday, amid concerns that demand was straining the world's capacity to pump and refine crude oil. (Full story)
Lundberg noted that if the crude oil supply remains undisrupted, "the gasoline price surge itself will probably be ending soon, if it has not already."
"Our demand for gasoline is always highest for June, July and August," she said of the summer months, when families typically take vacations. She said gasoline demand is expected to taper off after August.

Though a record in absolute terms, the price is still well shy of a record, if adjusted for inflation. The peak price would have been set during the Iranian revolution in March 1981, when a gallon of gas cost about $3 in today's dollars, Lundberg said.

Quote: Not compared to the 4.50ish they pay in europe.
If you don't think we are paying enough feel free to move to europe. They have alot more bicycle trials there BTW. Why are you so much for high gas prices???
I pay for all of those.
So, if you intended to make a salient point, I'm sorry to say it's not getting through. You really lost me when you said someone's gouging us on food. Perhaps if you'd care to explain that one, the rest would fall into place.
Because I don't like waste. They seem to accomplish the same thing we do in Europe without the dependence by forcing gas to be higher through taxes.
Shows how little you know about me (or have found out from other posts) - I think nuclear energy is a fantastic idea. A modern well run plant is VERY safe.
Oh, and I would be happy if we could get down to the level of Japan, Australia, the UK, Germany, or Italy. They can do well on their use levels. I think we can do better, but I see no reason on earth why we need to use 64% more oil per person than them. If we get down to their level, that's a 16% drop in worldwide demand. That would have a much bigger effect than the 1.25% increase in worldwide supply ANWR might bring (which I am not opposed to - just trying to keep things in perspective)....
No one is for higher gas prices...but alot of people ARE for seeing reality and seeing an end to all the incessant bitching. Everyone is probably paying $8-$10 dollars more per fill-up...without any change of driving habits or planning car trips more wisely. I know thats the case for me...I'm paying about $40-$43 per fill-up instead of $32-$35 per fill-up. I'm getting a little lighter on the pedal...and I'll try to plan car trips a little better now.
But...at any rate...BFD!
Say I usually fill up twice a month...in a year, that would come out to +-$240 [(2 fill-ups per month * 12)* say $10 more per fill-up]. If I have 2 cars...+-$480. People waste more than double that amount per year on nonsensical BS. Plus, the raping we all get from Social Security and income taxes is much worse. So quit yer bitching.

Where do you think the government's money comes from? Why do those of us who choose not 40 miles from our work, need to support those that do?
Nice coming from a 'Christian'.
Is that you are an idiot. High fuel prices mean EVERYTHING else is going to be more expensive.
I read that too, and just shook my head. Talk about living in a dream world. Sheesh!
Coming into work this morning in Cleveland it was $2.55/gal.
Driving home the price had jumped to $2.69/gal.
Yep. A FReeper enjoying the pain and suffering of others. That is the saddest thing I've seen yet on this forum.

I have a sales job and I fill up 2-3 times per week and my wife and I are very careful what we buy. We are not materialistic.. we still use my parentst hand me down 1978 magnavox TV.
So I can bitch all I want especially when exxon made 9 billion profit last qtr alone.
We are being screwed by the oil companies.
I just paid $2.679 for regular (87 octane) in Herndon, Va. Last time I filled up is was $2.489 and that was only 2 days ago.

Yes, we are. And GWB just gave them huge tax breaks. Go figure.
Government intervention? Price controls?
They think it's bad now, try that one on and see the chaos.
As for me, between my 3 kids, myself and my ex-wife, I;m paying for 5 SUV's and gas for 4 of them.
Don't hear me cryin' though, I'm in the O&G business. This won't last forever. We drilled a natural gas well in Nov. of 2000, it went on line in Feb. 2001 and paid out in six months at an average natural gas price of $1.85. That's how quick things can change. Nat Gas prices in the winter of 2000 were above $10.00 in CA. Currently they closed around $9.46 today.
Look out this winter, its gonna be expensive.
A very large percentage of both Freepers and DU'ers get off on seeing other people suffer, especially if said sufferers don't agree with their political ideology. It's sickening. I've really lost my taste for reading political forums because there is so much juvenile 'neener neener' type posturing going on.
Oh goody... Here come all the Nixonian constipated conswervatives... good grief!!!
Again, today, Rush Limbaugh had it exactly right when he frankly stated "I don't even want to hear about ANY of this!" He went on to say that too many of us have bought the BS that we can't drill off the coasts or Alaska... we won't let 'em build any refineries... we bought Jane Fonda's "China Syndrome" and now we find our savings suffering the "China Syndrome!"
And I add, we won't build, drill, save or eventually live well enough to pursue happiness because we simply won't act!!!
Maybe. But to me it's like having cancer in one lung and being told I should be happy about it because so-and-so has cancer in both lungs. That kind of logic escapes me.
