The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America denounced the security barrier Israel is building along the West Bank, saying Saturday that Israeli policy throughout the territories has brought "extreme hardship" to Palestinians.
The statement, called "Peace Not Walls: Stand for Justice in the Holy Land," is part of an advocacy plan for Mideast peace that delegates to a churchwide assembly adopted on a 668-269 vote.
It was approved at a time of heightened tension between Protestants and Jews.
Several protestant groups have angered Jews by protesting construction of the barrier, and some Christian denominations have considered divestment from companies that profit from Israeli control of the Palestinian territories.
The new ELCA strategy doesn't mention divestment, but it urges the denomination to move toward "stewarding financial resources - both U.S. tax dollars and private funds - in ways that support the quest for a just peace in the Holy Land." Lutheran leaders insist it is not an endorsement of economic pressure against Israel.

"U.S. Lutherans" aren't surrounded by hundreds of millions of people who want to kill them.
'Nuff said.
ELCA seems to be doing everything they can to push me back to the Missouri Synod...
Ping
Come to the Wisconsin Synod...www.wels.org
"but it urges the denomination to move toward "stewarding financial resources - both U.S. tax dollars and private funds - in ways that support the quest for a just peace in the Holy Land."
50-50 US funds to the Palestinians are being stewarded to front groups within these organaizations pushing these untimely resolutions.
"""Peace Not Walls""
funny...seems the wall has brought peace to Israel. Homocide bombings are down like 90%
the left opposes the wall becasue the Israelies are finding a solution to Palestinian terror that doesnt involve using the sacred cows of the religious left ie dialogue, understanding etc.
Any solution to terror that doesnt validate the religious left's beliefs will be oppossed
The ELCA is not associated with the LCMS nor does is views necessarily represent those of the Missouri Synod.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America denounced the security barrier Israel is building along the West Bank, saying Saturday that Israeli policy throughout the territories has brought "extreme hardship" to Palestinians.Even if you believe Israel has made policy mistakes, what does that have to do with the wall? Every country is entitled to border security - in fact it's a shame we don't take border security more seriously in the United States. The only reasonable complaint I can see about the wall is whether they are building it in the right place.
What is the Evangelical Lutheran Church, a branch of government or a free choice of religion to those who so desire to follow it?
Certainly what goes on in Israel shouldn't be a concern for a religious body in the USA.
After all, I thought that the SS and the State Department were in charge of foreign affairs with the backing of tax dollars and not the church with the backing of donations.
I like the wall because I am, basically, anti-war (even though I'm now a professional military historian). Why is it antiwar? It provides BOTH sides with security without having eithr side necessarily shooting at the other. They can glare, they can complain, they can bitch, but no one's being blown up or shot to pieces.
If not THE solution, it's A solution, for now.
ELCACA is the breakaway apostate pinko sheep of the American Lutheran church synods.
The Missouri Synod Lutherans still stand on Christ the Mighty Rock.....while all else is shifting sand.
Leni
24/7 - 365 days a year?
Ya know what, until these folks are living in a place where they could be violently murdered like Israel(or Detroit)they really should STFU
I wish you well my FRiend in your travels to content filled slavery.
It's worth noting that the wall has stopped the terror without the necessity of the Israelis killing any pals either, so I don't see how one can really say it's an *extreme* hardship.
This is reminiscent of the liberal/leninists that demand no patrolling of the desert of the American southwest to stop border jumpers even though it guarantees the deaths of many of those who are trying it. The Minutemen SAVED lives.
Typical dogooders.
Standing in Christianity certainly can not be defined as standing on a "mighty rock" via Lutheran teachings alone.
uh-oh, here we go...
I've known lutheran ministers who've said that ELCA might as well take the "L" out of their name...but now it seems they can keep it and just change it from "Lutheran" to "liberal"
They've lost me. The pronouncements on the ordination of gays and the blessing of same sex unions were luke warm at best. They're also changing the Book of Worship and there is no move at all to lessen their ties with the Episcopal heretics.
This thing about the wall is shameful left wing buffoonery.
