PET ATTACK: Gun curb call after cat shot

A WOMAN whose beloved cat was shot with an air rifle has branded the perpetrators as "barbaric".

Helen Porter is now too afraid to let her other cats play outside her house in Mewburn, North Bretton, Peterborough, in case they are targeted by gun-wielding youngsters.

Miss Porter (24) was horrified to find her black cat, Jenny, crying in pain outside the back door, with blood running out of her back leg.

She quickly rushed the pet to an emergency out-of-hours vetinary service, just after the incident on Wednesday, August 3, at about 9.45pm.

Luckily, the vets at the city's Broadway clinic, saved Jenny's leg – but she now has to hobble around with a metal plate in it for the rest of her life.

Miss Porter, who has three other cats, has now called for tougher rules on the teenage yobs she believes committed the crime, and for parents to have better control over their children.

She said: "We are now trying to keep our cats in. If these youths are willing to shoot one cat, I am sure they will not care about shooting a second. "What they have done is barbaric and I cannot believe they have done something like this.

"It is easy to say the police should do more to enforce the law, but I do not know what the answer is. "Perhaps one step would be to make sure people are licensed to use every gun, including airguns.

"If I was a parent, I would not allow my children to wander around with airguns."

Miss Porter said she and her partner, Miles Shepherdson (43), often saw teenagers playing with the guns and firing them in the street. She added: "How long is it before these people take a gun into a school and cause someone injury?"

Sarah Cooper, spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police, said: "We treat all firearms offences as serious offences.

"People do not need a licence to own an air rifle, but if you are caught with one in public and you are misusing it, it will be seized, and you could face up to six months in prison."

A marble shot from a wrist rocket would have been just as bad
for her kitty...or tuna flavored anti freeze..

Guns arent the problem...the problem is people with cold hearts..

No law on this earth or assigning full time police to each
citizen is going to ever change that..

How about making the pet owners pay for the flower beds, the car washings and other damages that the little darlings do. I love cats and have 2 that are kept inside. They are not allowed to cause any trouble to my neighbors. I would tell the pets owner that the cats did damage to my property. If the pet owners refused to corral their pets I would naturally think that the pets were not really wanted. I would solve the problem if the owner did not. Can you say shoot, shovel, shut up? There would not be a vet bill to worry about.

Don't control the air guns. Increase the penalties for hurting non-game and non-vermin animals with them, particularly cats, dogs, and other pet animals, and then publicize the new law.

What do you think I call people that let their little pets run loose and give other people grief?. I am cold hearted because I do not want my car messed up? I am cold hearted if I do not want cat poop in my flower garden? Would you do anything if I told you that there was a problem?. Then you wonder why dogs and cats get shot. How about the jackasses that take a walk so their little pets can take a crap in the neighbors yard and then do not even have the decency to pick up the mess.

The song was "Rooster" by Alice in Chains. Great song, a tribute to the one of the band member's father's service in Viet Nam. Apparently his dad was known in his unit for surviving some very hairy situations.

That's a good idea too. I used to have an expensive convertible roadster, and the local cats slept on the top, the the horizontal radiator grill vents in the front hood and on the engine vents on the trunk (warm in winter I guess). They scratched up the canvass top and the hair was impossible get off of it, and it got into the radiator and fell on the engine (burnt hair smell, yum).

I found that a super-soaker works well, except it also got the car wet. Alleviating the water-spotting problem, Nerf guns with beefed-up springs work well.

For the big dogs in the neighborhood that get loose, I found that one of those ultra-low-power Daisy BB guns in the rump works well. I know they don't pierce skin at 50' since I shot myself point-blank in the finger with one as a kid and only got a blood blister (I know, dumb-ass kid -- learned my lesson though).

Giving Copenhagen to cats should be illegal too.

At that it still would be better than giving it to muslims.

I recently acquired a kitten. She is an indoors pet (like my dog). I hope to leash train her. If I want to let her outside I will get one of those screened in cat tunnels so she can't roam. The only time my dog is let off the leash outside is when he's in my fenced in patio.

Then Copenhagen shouldn't be banned for cats. Sounds to me like it has been proven to make them active and go to sleepovers.

Some years ago a little bastard at the house down the street shot by cat with an air rifle. I couldn't prove it but I spoke at length with the brat's father, letting him know I would be keeping a close eye on his brood of little bastards. They moved within six months and I can only hope I was the cause.

Please remember: nearly 100% of child molesters first hurt or killed cats and dogs in their youth.

I have a neighbor with cat traps all over her yard. Any kitties captured go to the local animal shelter.

That sounds like my mother. Where do you live?

"...there are a bunch of cats in my neighborhood that like to poop everywhere and dig up flowerbeds."

Actually, cats NEVER "poop everywhere". DOGS "poop everywhere". Cats only "poop" where they can bury the result, which is probably why they "dig in flowbeds". But what the heck--it's only a little bit more fertilizer.

Actually, I think you would having me as a neighbor. I though lots of parties and make a mean BBQ.

A lot of my neighbors cats roam the neighborhood as well. They don't bother me. Its the attitude of many cat owners that bother me.

Well, if this was a European cat, then its a whole new ball game. This will have to be addressed in the EU constitution. Wait, it probably already is.

When I would visit my grandma this was one of the most fond memories. Cat got in her yard, we'd call for her. She'd get her air rifle, pump it up, raise the window, draw a bead, "mmeeeeeoooowwwwwww!!!" and away teh cat would go.

I don't see nothing barbaric about it.

Nowhere does it say the cat was allowed to roam free, perhaps it was fenced (tall fences) in the yard.

A couple of years back there, there were a number of incidents in a nearby neighborhood of people's cats being shoot.. through the window, inside people's homes.

If that's what turns you on ...
I just figure people who get upset about little bitty kitties are a shade unhinged.

cats need to roam and kill stuff and bring it home for adulation or a snack

guess they do it at their own peril.
