Texas-OU: The game’s the same but not the name ("Shootout" no longer)
Austin American-Statesman ^ | Wednesday, August 10, 2005 | Cedric Golden

...Southwestern Bell has re-upped its $$ sponsorship of the annual Texas-Oklahoma showdown in Dallas. And it has changed the name slightly of what used to be the SBC Red River Shootout. For the next three years, the game will be called the SBC Red River Rivalry.

Aw, crap. Okay, well pretend there is a picture of Vincent Price playing Batman's Egghead instead of that Angelfire graphic.

I don't agree. If we can get past the Buckeyes, I think Oklahoma goes down, too. And I don't think Mack should be fired, either. He didn't choke against Michigan.

It's not just a game, it's an event, and the fact that it's played in the same place at the same time every year helps create the sense of gravity surrounding the game. If you go to this one and don't sense that something a little extra ordinary is taking place, your soul is on ice.

They weren't frozen, they were just stale. But they'd better not come get Raider Red's guns.

Will they even keep score, as that might hurt the feelings of the one who isn't winning?

(Can't say loser, it's not PC)

Now people won't think they really are having a shoot out.

HEh heh. That's it, they think people will bring fewer gats to the game if they don't call it a shoot-out. Maybe they could combine it with a hand-gun buyback program! At least neither team has an indian motif.

I can't figure out why Oklahoma and Texas want to play in an old obsolete stadium in a rough part of Dallas.

Isn't it because it's on the Texas State Fairgrounds and is the climax of the fair? You know, with Big Tex and everything?

Next thing you know, they'll take the "cocktail" out of "The World Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" because they don't want the Georgia-Florida game to be associated with alcohol.

Or they'll take the "tail" out of "cocktail" and move the game to San Francisco.

One more thing: they've been starting the game at 11:00 am in recent years, to placate the TV networks. This doesn't give the fans who go to the game enough time to mill around the fairgrounds, eat corndogs, drink a few beers, let the animosity build. The game day experience is diminished somewhat by these 11:00 am starts.

Anybody else catch Rush talking about the Sooners today?
He explained how they were guilty of illegally claiming tribal lands by jumping the gun and then he speculated on the use of "Oklahoma" itself...part of his riff on the NCAA ban on all things Indian from post-season view.

The more Miles Brand talks the better Bob Knight looks.
