Gov. Bush Criticizes NCAA Ban on Seminoles Nickname

Gov. Jeb Bush criticized NCAA officials on Tuesday for their decision to penalize Florida State for using an American Indian nickname and symbols, saying they instead insulted the university and a proud Seminole Tribe of Florida. The NCAA's finding that the school's Seminoles nickname is "hostile and offensive," instead of honoring American Indians has the opposite effect, the governor said, because the tribe supports the school's use of its name.

"I think it's offensive to native Americans ... the Seminole Indian tribe who support the traditions of FSU," Bush said on his way into a Cabinet meeting. "I think they insult those people by telling them, 'No, no, you're not smart enough to understand this. You should be feeling really horrible about this.' It's ridiculous."

Meanwhile, attorney Barry Richard, who successfully led the legal challenge on behalf of Republican George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential recount in Florida, has agreed to represent the school in its case against the NCAA, Florida State President T.K. Wetherell said Wednesday.

"We recognize this is an emotional issue in Florida, and in other parts of the country there are people who feel just as strongly being opposed," NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said Tuesday. "We believe this decision was made on sound ground legally though as I said before there is an appeal process in place."

The school's board of trustees are scheduled to meet Wednesday in emergency session to discuss elements of its formal response to the NCAA.

The university has until Feb. 1 to make a formal appeal to the NCAA executive committee.

Florida State, Illinois and Utah are among 18 schools with an American Indian nickname or logo that will be prohibited by the NCAA from displaying them in postseason events, starting in February.

Rename them all with European based names--Vikings, Celtics, Kings, Dukes, Conquerers, Druids, Explorers, Saxons, etc.

I simply don't understand how one can find using the name of a group is an insult. Obviously most schools want a team name that honors the school, its students or something special to that state or location. (I imagine Devils and Pirates might be the exception). As a native of Illinois, I always thought the U of I took the name as a tribute to the Native Indians of the state and honored their warrior spirit. Guess I am just a redneck in a Blue State. Of course Kerry only carried some 14 of 102 counties, yet won Illinois.

The application of politically correct standards is always slanderous and an act of defamation. Shame on the NCAA.

The article I read said the nickname was offensive, and I thought that meant there was some other name besides Seminoles that they used, like Savages, Brutes, etc. But the "offensive" word is Seminoles.
I wonder who it is who decided this. American Indians themselves do not like the term Native American. They prefer their tribe name (like Seminole, Apache, etc) but after that they want to be known as Indians. It is the politically correct liberal white tower elitists who, copying the term African American, thrust the term Native American onto them.

So when do you change the name of your state? Guess the NCAA will next tell the Oklahoma schools that theyt can't use the state name, which translates as "Redman."

Next in the continuum is the elimination of team names with any reference to any ethnic group. Why not eliminate place names refering to any Indian or other ethnic group. Then certain place names need to be changed to satisfy some perpetually offended types. The ultimate end result - everything becomes merely coordinates on the liberal Borg Unimatrix.

Ok lets brainstorm some new names:

The Florida State Rednecks (nope insults southerners)
The Florida State Oldtimers (oops that is insulting to the retired persons)
The Florida State Swampers (darn too many endangered species in the swaps)
I got it how about the Florida State Sunshines (no no no too much sun is bad for you)
The Florida State Beach Bums (Um that will insult some of Floridas population)

Add any more that you can think of.

What is the Seminole's nickname?

I have not researched this, but my mother's side are long long time Florida natives. They told me the Florida Seminole's are one of the only tribes that never signed a peace treaty with the US, they hide in the Everglades, during the "march of tears".

I was thinking that maybe they could use the geographical coordinates of Doak Campbell Stadium as their team name, but then I realized that schools south and east of them would have smaller numbers for their latitudes and longitudes, and that might harm the self-esteem of those other schools' players. Let me try again...

I am part Fugawi, but don't claim the blood line very often. For one thing, I can't jump high enough to see over the tall brush.

The Ute Tribal Council supports the U of Utah's Ute mascot, but the NCAA bans the usage in tournaments. Clowns.

Just another bowl of PC crap for our dining pleasure.

The NCAA officials must live in some kind of academic vacuum, unaware of the real world of sports fans and positive ethnic roles. They must be liberal Demo Rats, members of the Jackass Party, like John Kerry who even screwed up the name of a Boston Red Sox player while pretending to be a "fan".
Let's ban "Fighting Irish" - very offensive to the Irish! Let's ban "Trojans" (might offend the Spartans, or some other brand name?).....
