Ex-POW Jessica Lynch says US used her as Iraq war symbol
AFP ^ | 8/7/05

Posted on 08/08/2005 9:32:05 AM PDT by Crackingham

Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch, whose capture and rescue in the early days of the Iraq war turned her into a US icon, said in an interview that the US government had used her as an upbeat symbol in the conflict.

"I think I provided a way to boost everybody's confidence about the war," Lynch told Time magazine.

"I was used as a symbol. They could show the war was going great because 'we rescued this person.' It doesn't bother me anymore. It used to," she said.

"Now that I've got my money and my TV movie and money for college, it doesn't bother me at all," she said.

I'd give Miss Lynch a bit o' slack.

She did serve, deserves to have her opinion heard....

And we have NO idea what kind of trauma she's gone through.

Thank you for posting that picture. I read his book (very interesting life story), and I always hoped she would meet him and his family. I'm glad to see she did.

What an idiot. Does she not realize how GLAD everyone was when she got rescued??? It wasn't a symbol of our war, numbskull....it was a symbol of chivalry, bravery, teamwork, and brains coming together.

Using a french distortion of JL's interview in TIME as a stick to beat her with. Very classy treatment of a service-related 80% disabled veteran.

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive veterans of earlier wars and how they were treated and appreciated by this country." - George Washington

I thought she was referring to the media attention.

It was a much smaller flag and rushed up while the unit was still being shot at. Not raised like you are thinking just kind of thrown up on the side to let following units know two things:
1. We are Americans up here do not shell us
2. Come on up we have a toe hold
Again the second flag was the official "planting our flag" deal that is common after a highpoint has been secured.
Again the filming and photographing was just luck and circumstance that the journalist was there at that time.
It is actually a fascinating story.
To read more try out this book: Iwo Jima: Legacy of Valor by Bill D. Ross
really quite remarkable

If you are referring to the Iwo flag raising i would suggest you read this and try "Educating yourself"
Iwo Jima - Legacy of Valor by Bill D. Ross
It meticulously walks the reader through the whole invasion including the flag raising. The first which was haphazard and the second which is the official one we all know and love. Lets see to sign off here i believe i will once again use your oh so poetic phrase of "BITE ME" "eat it" and oh yes once again "Please Educate Yourself"

I am so poetic because, if you read the book, to use words like "choreographed" shows you didn't understand it at all. I suggest you try the version that runs on the History Channel and the Military Channel. It is very accurate and detailed. If you still think the second raising was a put up job then - you can still bite me.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
I NEVER SAID IT WAS CHOREOGRAPHED
I WAS TELLING THE LAST POSTER THAT IT WAS NOT CHOREOGRAPHED

Look, I've read all the links to become more "educated" on the Battle for Iwo Jima, and I am not convinced my original posts were off the mark. Daughter and MAH may disagree with me on the use of the word "choreograph," but to me the word means that the photo and the act of flag-raising were NOT serendipitous.

As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a passionate lover of U.S. History, especially our military, I would say anything disparaging about our armed forces. My original point was, and still is, photo ops and stories like Jessica Lynch's are often used to bolster morale. Regardless of whether or not the flag-raising at Iwo Jima was the first or the second, or the size of the second flag was increaed to make it more photogenic, it served a noble purpose.

Unbelievable.

I love history too, Lou, and I have read many books about Iwo Jima. I've watched every documentary I can get my hands on. My own father was there. He was a corpsman. He talked. A friend of mine is the daughter of the adjutant who carried the flag to begin with; her father has appeared in multiple documentaries, to tell this story.

But no, Lou has it right, and had it right all along. Okay.
