"...I won't become part of the lovefest..."
I was very angry with Jennings after his "temper tantrum" comments following the big GOP sweep in 1994, mostly because I admired a man who could reach his level of prominence without even having gone to college, and because he had a good analytical mind and great delivery. I felt let down, I guess. I didn't understand how he could have misread the American voter so badly. Still, whenever I watched network news, it would be Peter Jennings, no contest. He was good at what he did and the broadcast business will not likely find another of his caliber. All they are turning out today are talking heads.
I have lost too many in my own family to cancer of one sort or another. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Prayers for Mr. Jennings and family.
And, no, you will never see a thread of this class on DU.
I haven't found a thread about this on DU.
I really haven't watched Jennings or any network news since the early '80s, when ABC had the three-headed anchor with Jennings, Max Robinson, and Frank Reynolds (who was my personal favorite). Still, Jennings was more watchable than Rather and Brokaw, and before CNN and Fox, I would watch ABC news for any breaking stories or election coverage. Sorry to hear of his illness.
