KNOXVILLE (WATE) --

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Tennessee is one of 18 states where scam artists have used the Internet to get possible victims.

According to a consumer alert from the Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Consumer Affairs, crooks get a mailing address from a posted resume, then mail a fake checks that appears to be from the State of Arkansas. The crooks ask the victim to cash the check and wire the money back to a potential employer.

The scam artists want you to send them money before you find out the check is counterfeit.

Arkansas officials say they believe the con artists are operating from Turkey and possibly Latvia."
