As a voting member of the Choctaw nation (seriously) I would like to formally lodge a protest against the NCAA for forcing schools to abandon mascots who personify the proud heritage of native people. Seeking to pacify a few in the name of political correctness they are actually further repressing an honorable link to the history and remembrance of a proud people who have already been marginalized by public actions and policies.
As the saying goes: Thanks for nothing.
Thanks, BlueNgold!
Note that the Michigan State Spartans, the Fighting Irish of ND, the Virginia Cavaliers, etc. are OK because they're named after white people.
Also, the Minn. Vikings & Boston Celtics are safe.
Consistent.......right?
Good for you!
Yours is a very good post and perspective. I am of Irish decent and have always taken pride in the University of Notre Dame being called the Fighting Irish. I don't understand the problem. Team nicknames are a celebration of historical figures and heritage.
Just wait until the NCAA declares you can't have references to Christianity in team nicknames and mascots. The ACLU should be all over that one - assisting the NCAA.
"mascots who personify the proud heritage of native people."
I'm not a Native American, but when I see a Chicago Blackhawks Indianhead sweater I don't think of unmotivated, drunken Indians. If the P.C. folks get their way, maybe that will be the only image conjured up.
You could (and should) be lead plaintiff in a class action suit. Ping to all FReeper lawyers.
