Sprinkling Holy Water on 'The Da Vinci Code'
New York Times ^ | August 7, 2005 | SHARON WAXMAN

Posted on 08/04/2005 11:43:04 AM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

But "Da Vinci," set for release in May, is shaping up as one of the movie world's more complicated exercises - so much so that Sony has dropped a scrim of secrecy over the affair, refusing to discuss anything but the barest details. The script has been closely controlled. Outsiders have been banned from the set. And those associated with the film have had to sign confidentiality agreements.

...their silence is a measure of concern about the potentially incendiary nature of the subject matter. The book, which is fiction, takes aim at central Christian dogma, claiming that Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene, who was meant to be his true heir. It alleges an enormous coverup by the Roman Catholic Church, which, according to the book, usurped Mary's place in favor of a male-oriented hierarchy that has suppressed what Mr. Brown calls the "sacred feminine."

...Studio officials have consulted with Catholic and other Christian specialists on how they might alter the plot of the novel to avoid offending the devout..

"We came up with three things," Ms. Nicolosi said: the more ambiguous approach to the central premise, the removal of Opus Dei and amending errors in the book's description of religious elements in art....

[T]here are signs that the studio has not ruled out attracting religious moviegoers, including those who made an international sensation last year of Mel Gibson's film, "The Passion of the Christ."

"The phrase I heard used several times was 'Passion dollars'; they want to try to get 'The Passion' dollars if they can," said Ms. Nicolosi, referring to her conversations about the film. "They're wrong," she added. "It's sacrilegious, irreligious. They're thinking they can ride the 'Passion' wave with this.

And I said, 'Are you kidding me?' "

Yep.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" was fiction, too.

He says it's FICTION based on SOME FACTS ..You're a royal idiot my man.And none too bright . I suggest reading Thomas A Kempis if your faithis rocked by a dime store mystery novel.

Considering that my very first words in this thread were "I'm not even a Christian", you've got a lot of nerve calling anyone else an idiot.

As for being none too bright, I've sold more words of fiction than you've read. At least the nurse showed you how to turn off the CAPS LOCK though!

Yes. But some here would be saying that you were overly sensitive for recognizing the anti-slavery angle. ;)

Try reading instead of selling books..You may open up that very narrow mind.

That's just the point I was trying to make. Brown calls the book fiction, but his research makes him a believer? Which is it? It's like he's saying, 'No, really guys, wink-wink, nudge-nudge, it's fiction, really, fiction.' And he's laughing all the way to the bank. It's an assault on Christians that pretends it isn't, like the kind of bad practical joke that was supposed to be funny but was just mean.

Dear Darkwolf377,

(May I call you "Wolf"?)

You're a welcome voice of reason. So refreshing.

Just wanted to say I appreciate your posts.

I'm doing my best to ignore the tireless (and clueless) hineybona.

Cheers,

Mrs. Don-o

Yes, and that's my only problem with this. What do I care if people read trash? I don't, not one bit--I've read, written and sold plenty of trash! :) That's completely beside the point; the point is the dissemination of lies. If Brown just claimed to have made all this stuff up and laughed it off, the book wouldn't have sold nearly as much, because the articles that are written about it are not about the potboiler aspects, which are dismissed in all these pieces; they're about the "facts" in the book.

I'm anti-stupidity, and this book puts more lies into the world.

I thought the book read very much like a movie. I loved it so much I read Angels and Demons. It was a good read.

He's got you fooled too then . It's more like wink wink it's a dime store novel but I have you bone heads all up in arms thinking it's a true slander on Christians. He's SELLING BOOKS ..get it..he's CREATING a controversy to sELL BOOKS.Again , my local priest had a ball with it ..It's a dime store novel , nothing more.If you see a real threat in it , that's a problem on YOUR part not the authors. He's trying to make money .AGAIN it's FICTION and listed as such

You are thoroughly wasting your time arguing with book-burners. Nothing you can say will shake those who haven't read it and already condemned it.

Then all fiction is lies ..Your supposed to be able to tell the difference by the time your 4 or 5 years old.If you can't then look on the inside cover of a book .It will tell you fiction or non fiction..No you know the difference. Fiction means NOT TRUE , MADE UP ..it could be based on SOME facts but it's still MADE UP..

Brown calls the book fiction, but his research makes him a believer?

Just to put that in context, he's saying it makes him a believer in the "facts" that he uncovered--NOT in the Church.

Someone rightly pointed out that this book is a publicist's dream, and it is. That's great, I wish I could come up with an idea this popular. But that doesn't change the reality that it's a church-bashing book, and people can deny that all they like. But I'd love to see what their idea of a REAL church-bashing book is. And yes, fiction can be used to make points--that's so obvious it seems silly to even point it out--look at Salman Rushdie.

It's a reflection of how completely out of touch Hollywood is with real people that they think they can get "Christian dollars" for this garbage.

yea, I keep asking these paranoid fanatics if they read the book and none have answered it as of yet.ANYONE who reads it , actually reads it can see it's like a comic book plot .Be hard to mistake it for FACTS..
