I'm considering getting transfered from my job and moving to San Deigo or Los Angeles (where my company has offices.)

Do they actually have offices in Los Angeles and San Diego?

I ask because a lot of people consider “Los Angeles” to be the generic Los Angeles “area.” IOW, you could be in Orange or Downey and they’d consider it “Los Angeles” (area), but it really isn’t in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile it’s one big megalopolis that could easily be Los-Naranja.

Housing is high. You could get a nice condo/townhouse in Irvine in the high $300,000’s.

If you want a detached (nice/safe) 3/2 bedroom/bath house you’ll be looking in the $600,000’s or $700,000’s. It goes up from there. You can spend WHATEVER you have.

It’s the SOS though – every place is the same. Once you have your “home” and once you figure out the best way to work and where the stores and shops are – every place is the same. Houston, Panama City, Dalkeith, Atlanta, Laramie, Portland, Oakland, San Leandro, Irvine, Woodville – they’re all the same once you get settled in. Don’t let the crybabies get over on you…

It’s not the end of the world and you shouldn’t get spooked by anonymous dopes on a message board. Similarly you shouldn’t get sold a bill of goods by some dope on a message board either… bottom line is that I’ve moved to 14 different states in the course of my life and have enjoyed each (to some extent) for different reasons. CA isn’t my favorite, but isn’t my worst experience either. Your mileage may vary.

Welcome-
California can use some good architechs or city planners...
Housing will be your biggest challenge- Big house or big commute. California is pretty large. SD- 1st, OC- 2nd, LA- Last; Use any contacts/internet to buy instead of renting
http://www.househunt.com/a-orange.htm. Leave all your bags and baggage back East- it's not worth the hassle cars, clothes, furniture. Antiques worth keeping- keep.

Living closer to work is less stressful... Condos are a good beginning. Nearer the beach is better.

Best of luck.

California by Hawk Nelson

I’m not falling for anymore of these tricks
I’m so tired of everything here
This sum is calling me to the west
Everyone’s having fun out there

My bags are packed as I’m looking out the window
Everything is so outdated here
I wanna move west to where the sun is shinning
I want my friends to all be there

Let’s pack up and move to California
She’s got lots of friends out there
We’ll never get bored cause we can go boardin’
Let’s let the sunshine take us there

I’m tired of taking it slow
So tired but I’m not sleeping
I’m wired about to pick up my board
Cause we’re all heading out for the weekend

Let’s pack up and move to California
Hope on board before we get older
Raise your hands and shout for California
Come on, come on, come in, come on

Let’s pack up and move to California
She’s got lots of friends out there
We’ll never get bored cause we can go boardin’
Let’s let the sunshine take us there

Come on, come on, come on, come on

Let’s pack up and move to California
She’s got lots of friends out there
We’ll never get bored cause we can go boardin’
Let’s let the sunshine take us there

Let’s pack up and move to California
She’s got lots of friends out there
We’ll never get bored cause we can go boardin’
Let’s let the sunshine take us there

Let’s pack up and move to California
Hop on board before we get older
Raise your hands we’re heading for the border
Come on, come on, come on, come on

My advice would be: don't.

I'm a lifelong Californian. If I could, I'd move to Idaho, from what I hear.

There are a lot more conservatives in California than one would think. The area you are considering however, is not known for conservatives, but there are some. San Diego is beautiful, and one of my favorite places in the state.

Listen, two of the three conservatives who live in CA are moving to TN late this summer, having given up completely on the state.

I'm in Los Angeles and a Conservative business gal working on a trading desk in the stockmarket. I'm an L.A. native. It actually is great here ... it's not New Jersey. You will only like it to the extent that you can adapt.

Good luck and Freepmail if you need.

SoCal is a vast improvement from Jersey. You'll absolutely love it. And there are far more consevatives out here then they want you to know about.

San diego is much preferable to Los Angeles. Let me know when you're coming and I'll roll out the red carpet for you.

Good for you. I just moved from Youngstown, Ohio, an area between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I went to San Diego, and rented a decent but very small place (compared to my ohio home) in Cardiff-by-the-sea. 1 mile to the beach.

Of course it could take months to sell back in Ohio, so I am not even thinking of buying out here.

Being single you have a lot more options. I'd tell you I was a studly hunk waiting to sweep you off your feet, but at 36 that is no longer true, and my wife wouldn't like me saying that. I had to move to a family and school friendly community, whereas you can go to Pacific Beach, or the gaslamp particularly if you don't mind being a roommate. If you want to be by yourself, those areas are a little tougher to get for 1300.

Of course like it has been said many times it depends where your office is. If it is in La Jolla, you might want to go north a little ways. If it is Mission Valley there are great apt. communities down there. Downtown, you have gaslamp, little italy and balboa park.

In my adult life I've lived in WI, IA, IN, MI, IL, NE, AK, TX, FL...and California.

I spent two years in Sacramento, and another half hear in Merced. I can't think of a single place in this nation I'd be less willing to return to (to live) than California. I can think of no advantage to living there, aside from some fair weather...but you can get as good or better weather in other places.

That state is overflowing with morons, communists, and a$$holes,

Hey Chick. I just visited both in early July. I have family in the San Gabriel Valley just east of LA and friends (and I had a booking) in San Diego. I would take SDiego. Housing costs in both areas are high; not much difference there. SDiego weather is superior. If you want to do the LA culture, you can drive up.

What is it that you design?

Any Freepers want to give a Jersey girl some advice?

You'll love it.

Great beaches, deserts, mountains, and the most beautiful country in America.

In Southern Cal, the weather can not be beat.

I am talking 70 degrees in December, and about 85 in summer.

And snow only if you want it!

You can fish an alpine lake in the morning, go 4 wheel driving in the wide open desert, and lay on the beach in the evening.

ALL IN THE SAME DAY!

Oh, and a word of advice.

Much of the country is very jealous of California and it's wonderful year round weather. Very jealous. But it's been that way since I can remember, going back to the late 50s. Nothing new.

Can't blame them, in summer, while they are sitting in pools of sweat, from horrific, uninhabitable humidity and heat, we are enjoying about 85 degrees, with little or no humidity, with the beach, mountains and desert all close by.

In the winters, most of American sits in a dark, cold, frozen landscapes, where the wind blows, and their cars slide into each other on the ice, where it's a pain in the butt just to go outside.

All this while they curse California! HA!

There's an awful lot of red states between those blue states. You couldn't find one of those?

My dad and mom moved to California a few years ago. My dad became sick and died shortly after, much too young. He told us his only regret in life was not moving to California sooner.

Leave the snow and cold and don't look back. California is a great adventure. The ocean is beautiful and flowers bloom in January.
