Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

Also, you and I both know there's a significant difference between the rare 'escape' and people who don't care if their dogs are roaming the neighborhood.

I made that point in my post. If there are persistent problems, then the authorities need to get involved.

Shooting in self defense is one thing, but on sight is another. I mean - c'mon - if a 5 year old accidentally lets out a doberman family pet (who are much mellower as a breed than they where 10 years ago), I think it is cruel. One of the dogs that I had in my garage over night was a Mastiff Rott mix (and his bulldog buddy). The family was upset - evidently a utility person had not shut the gate after him and the dogs got out.

You probably haven't read every post on this thread - I was lunged at/ attacked by a german shepherd. Many big dogs make me nervous, but I stand by my statement that shooting on sight is cruel. Humans have the power of reason and judgment, and a shooting on sight flies in the face of that.

I had a friend that said the same about his young Rott ... until it attacked him about six months later.

Same with my ex father-in-law and his chow.

These dogs aren't too smart and when they get confused they will lash out at the nearest target, whomever that might be.

I was one of the first female DEA licensed Narcotic dog trainers in the state of Texas, I have handled and trained some of the best personal protection dogs anywhere. I have trained bomb dogs and show dogs and obedience dogs. My only problem was humans who were to lazy to train than keep up training or just could not or would not be the alpha human.

These lovable breeds can and sometimes do kill. If YOUR dog kills YOU should be subject to the death penalty or life in prison. If your personality is not strong enough to control one of these breeds DON'T get one. Breeders you know better!

Who in their right mind is going to argue that we should kill all children just because some of them kill? That's precisely the level of argument being put forward here by one or two posters.

It's an interesting social question on many levels. On the one hand, I have every sympathy for intelligent dog owners who want to keep huge fanged beasts such as rotties.

OTOH, I have a 50# 9 year old daughter, who likes walking around our sidewalks.

If stupid neighbors had a large aggressive dog which regularly got loose, I'd have a major problem with that. If it was an unstable pit bull, I'd be very tempted to take preemptive actions. But there are no such dogs in my area, so it's just speculation.

Now, if I lived on major acreage, I'd probably have a couple of dobies.

But I have a Lab story regarding my daughter, too. One of the neighbor's dogs (which they had enough sense to keep chained and fenced in their back yard) made an escape one day. Returning from church one Sunday afternoon, my daughter and I exited the car as the garage door went up. I looked across the street and a their Labrador looked straight at my daughter and his fur raised on his back and he started showing his teeth as he began trotting in our general direction. I yelled at her to get in the house and I ran in the garage behind her and grabbed a CO2 BB pistol. I had to shoot this dog at least 10 times to get it to retreat and it would never leave my yard, but kept stalking me from the bushes near the entrance to my garage. I went in the house and grabbed a 9mm and a cordless phone and called the police to report a vicious dog. Before the police and animal control arrived, the owners drove down the street calling the dog's name. I waved them down and pointed out their dog in my bushes and let them know I would shoot it if it ever came near me or my daughter again. They protested how "sweet" their dog was and I pointed out that a "sweet" dog wouldn't stay around for me to put 10 BB's in it's butt. I informed them that they would need a vet to remove the BBs, but I intentionally only shot it in it's hind quarters to prevent permanent damage. They were shocked and I explained that I'm a nice guy and don't have a problem with big mean dogs... until they violate my security and safety. They have been good neighbors and I've never seen the dog out since then.

I'm not a fan of large dog's but I don't want the government to tell people they can't own them. I also don't want the owner's to be irresponsible and let them attack innocent people. It's simple. Owners should be responsible for the actions of their pets and when I feel threatened by an animal, I tell the owner I will kill it if it threatens me or my family.

Really? Am I and/or my little children in danger of some gun determining on its own to attack and kill my child, without the aid of a shooter. Have guns changed since I bought my last? Have I missed the moment at which they suddenly grew legs and were able to propel themselves into position to fire on people without warning?

Last time I checked there wasn't a single gun on earth that could determine on its own to attack and kill someone without the manipulation of a person.

When guns start randomly wandering into driveways and shooting little kids while they're in the arms of their mothers, I'll entertain such ridiculous comparisons.

Well..The good news is that the AKC reports that there were 100,000 registered Rotts in 1993. Today there are only about 22,000. That's a huge decrease. I wonder if the potential liability from owning a 150lb "Damian" dog is causing people to think twice or have they switched over to Pit Bulls?
