More Dieters Ditch Carb Counts (AP)

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- More dieters are ditching carb counts and biting into baguettes with gusto these days. ...

This week's bankruptcy filing by the late Dr. Robert C. Atkins' old company provide fresh evidence of the low-carb diet's demise, a downward spiral that began early last year. But no single new diet has filled the void.

Observers say the only sure thing -- given the boom-and-bust nature of weight-loss trends -- is that something will pop up eventually.

''There isn't one single strong contender,'' said Anne M. Russell, editor-in-chief of Shape magazine. ''If you look at what the single largest trend is, it's weight gain.''

Chapter 11 filings by Atkins Nutritionals Inc. on Monday came about a year and a half after books like ''The Atkins Essentials'' rode the best seller charts, bread makers were back on their heels and Burger King introduced a Whopper without a bun.

But Atkins has been in decline since February 2004, said Harry Balzer, a food industry analyst at market researcher NPD Group. Balzer claims Atkins was one of those demanding diets that simply ran its course, going from fad to fade like so many others before it, including the Scarsdale and the cabbage soup diets.

How far and how fast did Atkins fall? By September 2004, surplus low-carb products were being shipped to food banks in Appalachia....

Ruth Kava, director of nutrition for the American Council on Science and Health, figures it might be something like a high-protein diet.

''Somebody will come up with something new,'' she said. ''There's a lot of creativity out there in Diet World."

If you google "Atkins" AND "Dangerous" you get OVER 362,000 (three hundred sixty-two thousand) entires that pop up. So, take your pick as to which "DANGEROUS" article you like best!

Google "Atkins diabetes" for 686,000 or "Atkins works" for 867,000. Geez, you can google for anything but reading the 1975 original version of the book (not the newer after his death version) will educate you.

I think Saul of Tarsus was really onto something. I have actually had people challenge my refusal to smoke pot by using the "moderation in all things" argument.

Some calories are more readily used than others. The consequence is that 1000 calories from sugar is not the same as 1000 calories from fat, and certainly not the same as 1000 calories from protein which must first be converted, at some energy cost, into sugar.

Google "flour" and "dangerous" - over 400,000 hits.

Google "sugar" and "dangerous" - over 1.8 million hits.

Maybe, but I eat unrefined carbs *and* I am a vegetarian! Get protein from a few nuts, some milk products, and beans.

Lost some weight already, don't do scales so I don't know exactly.

Getting the body moving is definitely one of the main factors. When I used to exercise much more, I never had a weight problem. Exericise (I don't mean jogging or running which is really a stress on the body, esp the feet, ankles and knees) helps normalize the appetite as well.

Also, I don't own a TV so no just sitting and munching!

The pecans were quite healthy. Canned fruits, though, are not much different than marshmallow fluff. Remember, your body doesn't care what kind of carbs you eat ~ it will turn them all into usable sugar instantly.

Exactly. You don't have to buy their products in order to eat low-carb. People who confuse the two don't know what they are talking about. Atkins is a way of eating, not a product-based service like Jenny Craig.

This headline is deceptive.

Dieters are still using low carb diets. They aren't buying enough Atkins, Inc. products to allow that corporation to make a profit.

You don't have to buy a single Atkins product to eat a low carb diet. The rare roast beef from the deli is way yummier than anything the Atkins corporation has to offer.

The real reason the Atkins corporation is in trouble is competition. There are lots and lots of low carb products on the market.

"have had trouble getting used to the dryness."

Try Two Oceans, a South African red wine, made of Shiraz grapes. It's not dry or sweet. I love it. I also do not like dry, acid tasting wines.

Now, that word "balanced" is loaded. Folks who live in the Arctic, for instance, find few carbs available unless they're shipped in. This has gone on for thousands of years up there. They survive on diets almost devoid of carbs.

SOme of us aren't made to eat bread, rice and potatoes.

BTW, the best way to avoid a large early morning sugar and insulin spike (while you are asleep) is to eat something like a chunk of cheese just before bed.

And if they are religious, there's no need to bring up biblical principles of unbalanced heretics telling people not to enjoy foods created by God.

God created many things that most people would refuse to put in their body...not including twinkies. I refuse to smoke herbs. Am I a heretic?

Maybe you should read Atkins' books. It's not a dumb diet; you only think it's dumb if you don't understand it.

It was crappy tasting and over priced is why the Atkins Nutritionals did not sell well. Most successful low carbers steer clear of the frankenfoods. They stick to meat, eggs, poultry, seafood, veggies, low glycemic fruits, whole grains, nuts, real fats and moderate amounts of dairy products. They don't eat tons of meat and fat only.

The truth is low carbing has allowed a lot of diabetics and very fat folks lose a lot of weight without feeling like they were starving to death. If people would just read the book and follow the plan as written they would see that the severe limiting of carbs was only for two weeks. Then you add them back in slowly until you find out where you stop losing weight and then reduce the amount back a little to lose weight until you reach your goal.

re your post #73 - eat simple, natural foods, drink pure water, get enough good sleep, exercise, regular water-fasting, and keep a positive, wholesome attitude and philosophy..

I agree; I think this is the way to go.

Also, I saw Jack Lalane on TV recently - I think he was celebrating his 90th birthday. Totally fit, and with his full mental capabilities, and still exercising everyday.

I also notice that all the people who have lost a lot of weight, like the guy someone mentioned on the thread who lost 270 pounds, have taken up cooking their own foods. That is something I am very into.

In addition, I realize the importance of eating simple, non-processed, raw foods like a lot of fruits and vegetables. And, I find I do not even go down the enormous "SNACK" aisles in my grocery store anymore. There's nothing there for me.
