Detroit T-Shirt Offends Some, Amuses Others

Store Says Shirt Is Not Intended To Slam City

POSTED: 5:33 pm EDT August 2, 2005

DETROIT -- A Detroit T-shirt that some may interpret to be offensive is being sold at a store in Birmingham, Local 4 reported.

Caruso Caruso on West Maple Road has a wide selection of Detroit T-shirts, but it's the one that says "Friends don't let friends live in Detroit" that is turning heads, the station reported.

Local 4 purchased the last one available at the store and took it to Detroit's Campus Martius to get reaction from people who live and work in the city.

"I wouldn't wear it, but it's funny," said one person.

Another person called the T-shirt "mean-spirited," and added that "Detroit is a very friendly place."

Lennon Caruso said most of the store's clothing is made locally and the T-shirt was not intended to slam Detroit.

"Detroit is fine," Caruso said. "There's nothing wrong with it, absolutely."

But one person suggested that people should visit the city a couple of times before printing a T-shirt with a negative saying, the station reported.

Caruso Caruso said people who don't like the shirt can opt for a more popular item at their store, the "Detroit Is For Lovers" T-shirt.

BTW..didn't Detroit have a mayoral primary yesterday?

Yes they did. Here's a snip from a WaPo article.

Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick and former deputy mayor Freman Hendrix emerged from a 12-candidate mayoral primary to advance to the general election. Hendrix had a double-digit lead over Kilpatrick with 45 percent of the vote counted.

Kilpatrick was heralded as Detroit's next great hope when he was elected four years ago at the age of 31, but his term has been marred by a $300 million budget deficit, scrutiny of his running up huge bills on a city credit card and the city's lease of a luxury SUV for his family.

Is it possible to insult a city with Kwame Fitzpatrick as the mayor?

The answer is a resounding no. They brought it upon themselves. (However, the name is Kilpatrick.)

Apparently those who are offended have never seen the Detroit Tigers or Detroit Lions play.

Just didn't want to claim Kwame as one of my own.

(By the way, having been born in Detroit, I want one of those shirts.)

How about: "Detroit: where the weak are killed and eaten"

Or this one: "Detroit, it's a Third World country!"

Or this one, which they give to new arrivals in Hell: "Where else was I supposed to go, Detroit?"

Hell isn't that far from Detroit, probably 50 miles.

Before I graduated college I was contacted by a company that offered me about $20k more starting than I had reasonably hoped to get right out of school.

The catch was that the position was in Detroit.

I didn't take it.

Is that an actually shirt? My brothers would go nuts if I could get those for them. (We're ex-Detroiters, now in Cali.)
