Good point. I guess they know they don't have the votes? Or is it something else? Not really committed? But if it would get them votes don't you think they'd introduce legislation to do just about anything?

I think you have to get rid of abortion by changing minds, not laws. I'm uncomfortable with Roe as law, but also as a law banning abortion.

Howard sounds like Grouch Marx when he was schmoozing a woman with words. " How could a woman with your MONEY and talent and MONEY and looks and MONEY and personality and MONEY and brains not be desirable"?

How could a voter with your VOTE and principles and VOTE and convictions and VOTE and sincerity and VOTE and concern and VOTE not be desirable?

These people are schizophrenic!!

I think it is as you say, something else.  I think it is a strategy for keeping power.  I don't mind upsetting Republicans every bit as much as Democrats on this issue.  I believe the Republican Party sees this gapping wound like a gold mine they can plunder for a long, long time.  I believe they know that introducing an amendment that would prohibit court intervention would close the gold mine (abortion issue).

The Republican Party has control of Congress and yet they do not introduce a Constitutional Amendment on abortion.  Pro-lifers that have been voting Republican based on this issue alone are among the most manipulated voters in this country.  They've been hoodwinked time and time again.  It makes no difference to them that lesser legislation is introduced in Congress, and often passed while the amendment process is kept in the closet.  The lesser legislative acts are like crumbs from the cake, but don't expect to have the cake served.

I find it interesting so many pro-life people are excited with the nomination of Judge John Roberts to the Supreme Court thinking he will have favorable rulings limiting abortion, yet fail to see the Congress by way of the amendment process could take this issue away from the courts completely.  The pro-lifers are willing to accept a "maybe pro-lifer" when a constitutional amendment would make this a non issue completely.  Just more cake crumbs being fed the pro-lifers.

Here's some interesting numbers.  Last week CBS conducted a poll of voters regarding abortion.  Twenty-five percent of respondents favored abortion under any circumstance.  Seventy percent favored greater restriction.  Five percent were unsure.  Now, compare that to the numbers supporting a flag protection amendment where fifty-five percent favor such an amendment and 42 percent oppose the amendment, and three percent are unsure.  That's awfully close to a clear split among voters, yet that didn't stop the amendment process for flag protection in Congress.  Abortion is a much clearer issue among voters, yet the amendment process isn't being raised in Congress at all.  Something isn't right here.

If I am correct in my assertion the Republican Party recognizes the abortion issue as a means to retain power on government, then I can take it a step further and say they don't mind trading the lives of unborn children to retain that grip on power. If I am wrong, let the Republicans in Congress introduce an amendment restricting abortion. It's time for Republicans to put up, or shut up.

If I have offended FReepers with my views of the Republican Party on the issue of abortion, Free Republic is a conservative forum, not a Republican Party forum.
