It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.
Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.
The women and children all Muslims have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.
Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.
But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...
Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

They do so voluntarily... one can't be oppressed if they accept it willingly....
Just so long as we never ask Muslims to conform to the American way of life. Just so long as we bend over backwards not to offend them. Just so long as we kiss their butts because we are so happy to have them in our country. I know I feel safer with Muslims in America.
If it were a "male only" hour, or a conservative Christian group, there would be screaming from the rooftops.
Think man, think
This is not nice. We are allowing them to dictate to us and forcing us to adapt to their 'religious' rules. If they want to use the pool, fine, use it, and swim in your stupid abaya. What's next, letting them swear-in using the Koran? (Oops, that's right, they are fighting for that right in North Carolina!)
Can we rent the pool and swim co-ed neked?
Not the Boy Scouts though, I bet.
"It's just been probably 10 years, and we've grown exponentially."
How unfortunate. I wish they would all go back to where they came from and stop annoying us with their antiquated, un-American, regressive and parochial social patterns. Their goal is to turn a society that tolerates THEM into one which tolerates no other behavior, as the recent cases in England of these people protesting the presence of centuries old pubs and taverns.
"Islam is open to interpretation"
True. And contemporary Islam, dictated by Sharia Law, is far more onerous than was Islam in the more liberal and enlightened days when Islam was a preserver of science and learning, and Haroun al Rashid and not the Wahhbists were the trend setters.
The muslime family I know..the husband treats the wife sort of like a beloved pet..you know, a dog or cat.
The wife is not taken seriously, the husband is very benevolent, until she pees on the floor that is..not really, but that's what I remember thinking..
Look at it this way, now they are only two hundred years behind the times instead of two thousand.
That does create a dilemma doesn't it ?
You all know I very rarely (actually, never) yell in my posts, so please forgive me if I make an exception here:
AW GEEZ, PEOPLE, WOULD'JA puh-LEEEZ READ THE ARTICLE FIRST??!
It clearly states, "Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee." There's nothing there aaout "American society modifying itself" or "muslim demands." They're RENTING the pool, just like any other group.
These ladies just want to swim in privacy, wearing the swimwear they feel comfortable in.
The article also says it's open to Jewish or Christian women, some of whom also apparently like the all-woman modesty angle.
Posting such mean little comments just makes you look ... oh, dear... so mean and little...
but the Boy Scouts can't use the place for a meeting, right?
Are you nuts? You think it's rather nice to be completely segregated?!

Exactly, if you can not abide by US law, don't swim. The pool certainly can not blatantly violate US law with some of its employees.
God that pool must smell awful afterwards!!
Just another example of how islam demands that everyone conform to their ways. One thing here, one thing there, the next thing they will say they are offended by people of any other religion so all other religions will be banned so we don't offend them.
It's time to put an end to this charade of calling islam a religion.
If they pay a rental fee as other groups do, what is the problem? If it were a completely public pool that had these restrictions I could see the issue.
That's fine... if it's a Private pool.
And as far as I know there is nothing in the Koran about this type of dress for women. It was made up by a bunch of thin-skinned Arabs who are perified of women at heart.
