Yes Al used to send him tapes... My favorite Al song was just Al and his Accordion on a tape doing a ode to mass transit called "Another one rides the Bus" to the tunes of Queens "Another one bites the Dust"....
Oingo Boingo also got part of there start sending tapes to DrD when they were "The Mystic Knight of the Oingo Boingo"
DrD was and LA radio legend in the 70,80...7 to 10 Sunday night on the Might Met (DrD was syndicated around the country later but started and home station was in LA)
"Little bit of Heaven 94.7 KMET..Twee del Dee!"
Might Met ...Greatest FM Rock station ever! RIP
(Can't believe they kill "The Might Met" for that new age crap "muzak" "the wave"

I have just one of Weird Al's cds -- some kind of greatest hits compilation I think. Another One Rides the Bus is on there. His stuff is brilliant, and in interviews, he comes off as a real down-to-earth guy.
I just barely remember Oingo-Boingo. DJs like Dr. Demento were about the only ones who would promote guys like these. Certainly, the ones out there now (all owned by corporate giants like Clear Channel) would never give these acts the time of day, and that's too bad.
And who can forget "Pico and Sepulveda", the "Shaving Cream" song, "Boobsalot" and Wild Man Fisher...
Dr. Demento truly was a classic.....as for "Dr." Dean, well, he's just a jerk.
I loved Dr. Demento when I was a kid.
