Police Find Man Dead In Doorway

DAVIE, Fla. -- An 18-year-old was shot to death early Wednesday morning after apparently breaking into a home in western Davie.

The shooting happened at about 1:45 a.m. in the Chelsea at Ivanhoe community on Southwest 51st Street.

Davie police said a man and young woman -- possibly father and daughter, according to neighbors -- were sleeping inside the home when an intruder came in and startled them. The man took protective action and shot the intruder twice, striking him once in the face.

When police arrived, they found the intruder dead in the front doorway of the home.

"At some point while this young man between the age of 18 and 20 was inside the home, several gunshots rang out," Lt. Bill Bamford said. "The young man was struck twice and he fell dead in the front foyer area of the home. We don't know if there's any relationship between this young man and the residents of the home or if this was just a random act -- that he was trying to break into a home."

The victim was identified as 18-year-old Richard Rojas, of Miami.

NBC 6's Tina Conte reported that Davie police towed a red BMW from the scene that apparently belonged to Rojas.

Police are trying to determine what prompted the shooting and what relationship, if any, Rojas had with those inside the home.

An investigation is ongoing.

I am not a genus and don't claim to be but to me if he was found dead inside the doorway, it would sure look to me like he was breaking in.

I know I will get flack for this, but someone should be charged with something on this one.

Not necessarlily. Don't discount the possibility of an obsessed, stalking, ex-boyfriend. I've had friends who've had to deal with such, and let me tell you...shooting may have been completely justified.

The BMW was probably stolen too. This is a cut and dried "defending his home" situation. More power to the shooter.

Colorado Make May Day Law is great. If here in Colorado the break in justifies the shooting.

And it also may have been a cold-blooded murder of opportunity by Dad, so yes, we could speculate all day about exactly what happened and I am not discounting anything.
I still feel though, if he claims he shot an 'unidentified intruder' he should have had better control over who had keys to the house before doing so regardless of the time of night.
If he knew it was the ex-boyfriend and claims he had motive, that is something else. He still should have controlled the keys, of course, or changed the locks.
If a key gets lost to my house or I have any doubts at all about a copy being made that I do not know about, I change the locks for precisely this reason.

Probably a story with a happy ending, but the red BMW makes you wonder.

That's the way it should be everywhere.

Just think of the tax dollars that have been saved, trying to defend this punk, and getting him back on the street to rob again, and again.

Crime has once again become a very dangerous occupation!

This will hinge upon the father knowing or not knowing the boyfriend had a key and whether or not the boy was a "houseguest" of the daughter given that the car was purportedly at the house all day. We are ALL making assumptions here but if I was investigating, here is what I'd want to know: was the boy a guest of the daughter at any time during the day? was the father aware of this (if knew there were house guests, then shoot-first becomes questionable)? if a guest, did the daughter and boy lead the father to believe the boy had gone home? did the daughter arrange for the boy to come back after dad was asleep? what will the boy's tox screen show? If he was under the influence, then opening a door with a key can sound much like someone breaking in. Who gave the boy the key? did the father know he had one? Until a lot of questions are answered, this cannot be called a righteous shoot.

And anyone questioning young punks in the greater Miami area driving late model expensive cars just hasn't been keeping up. Jeez.

The man who shot him was the boyfriend of the Mother.

So the mother's boyfriend was unaware that the daughter's boyfriend had a key to the house?

Signed up today just to post on this thread, eh?

And it also may have been a cold-blooded murder of opportunity by Dad, Story linked at #28 seems to indicate that it was not the Dad who did the shooting, but rather a "guest".
