Passengers' suspicions lead to search of ship in Newport (RI)

NEWPORT - A dinner cruise aboard the Harbor Queen on Tuesday night turned into an exercise in homeland security after some passengers expressed concerns about four men of Indian descent and an unattended GAP bag.

The four men, all American citizens who work at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Connecticut, were detained after the boat was diverted to a pier at Fort Adams State Park about 7:30 p.m., instead of its home berth at Bowen's Ferry Landing. Members of the Newport Police Department, the Rhode Island State Police, the state Department of Environmental Management and the Coast Guard were waiting at the dock.

"Roughly, the whole thing kind of came down to nothing," Petty Officer Dan Coates said this morning.(snip)

Coates said the captain of the Harbor Queen phoned the Coast Guard station at Castle Hill after receiving reports that some passengers were concerned about an unattended shopping bag and what they believed to be the suspicious activities of four men aboard the dinner cruise.

The men were roaming through restricted areas of the ship and taking photos with their cell phones, Coates said. (snip)

There was an article I deleted several months ago (cannot find it but it may have been linked on here) because it was so over-the-top and provided no evidence to support its claims. I believe it was an editorial in an Indian newspaper/newssite (not sure if Indian-based or expatriate). But it claimed UBL and a nuke(s) were going to be smuggled through India, and out one of their ports - - possibly because 1) India is an ally and not as closely watched 2) the Muslim minority in India is not terribly extreme for the most part and therefore not suspect, and 3) the logistics would be easier than trying to leave through a Pakistani or Iranian port (overland from the region is not likely to succeed).

It looked like the Indian version of the National Enquirer (half expected to see an Elvis sighting or alien abduction story to follow). But when Iran-Contra broke, it was some small, anti-US, Lebanese newspaper that leaked it, and I don't think anyone took it seriously at first (the idea that Ronald Reagan was cutting backroom deals with the terrorist Godfathers in Iran sounded too unreal to believe). So you never know where you'll find a clue I suppose.
