The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Terrorists could be just getting started
Full Story

New York City and Washington. Bali, Indonesia; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Istanbul, Turkey; Madrid, Spain. And now London.

When will it end? Where will it all lead?

The experts aren't encouraged. One terrorism researcher sees the prospect of "endless" war. Adds the man who tracked Osama bin Laden for the CIA, "I don't think it's even started yet."

The ACLU of North Carolina on Monday accused state court officials of not responding quickly enough to a controversy involving the use of the Quran for courtroom oaths.

The ACLU should drop the "A" from their title. "CCLU,*" "MCLU,**" "LCLU,***" or "DCLU****" would be far more appropriate.

imagine what is in President Bush's mind.

It must be jam-packed with possible horrific reactions to simple actions. So many people are outraged about the open borders and he seems content to let it remain the same no matter what the threat. His friend Vincente Fox has no control over the borders, the MS13 gangs and the drugrunners. Those problems have already become our problems. California has its own version of "Minutemen," in today's news (obviously they feel it is needed).

I don't understand why just about every other country is getting their borders secured (270 border patrol added in Canada per news today), except ours.

Good assessment on what may be on Dubya's mind.

My assessment would have been a "neutral" one, as in postive, negative, neutral. Or, think of a number line.

Good night y'all.

Be ever vigilant.

SNIP: British Muslim leader barred from US

A prominent British Muslim leader, Sheikh Dr. Zaki Badawi, has been refused entry into the US without explanation, the BBC reported on Friday, a week after the deadly suicide bombings in London. Badawi told the BBC he had flown from London to New York on Wednesday to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution there, but was turned back by the authorities after being detained for six hours. The Muslim leader said US immigration officials had said only that he was “inadmissible”.

Good assessment on what may be on Dubya's mind.

Thank you TAquinas! I'm not meaning to be harsh on Dubya, only questioning how he can be so calm in the face of all that is happening along those borders (North AND South).

The responsibility of a President must be overwhelming (highly understated)! Amazing he is able to accomplish ANYTHING with the democrats thwarting his every attempted move. The Dims want Dubya to have more charisma with foreign countries, yet they (and their minions) do everything in their power to demean him and his administration. Thankfully GWB has classy Laura to calm him.

I've been having a heck of a time getting on FR tonight. Around 3:30, my ISP (optonline) stopped accessing the board. I figured it was down, but asked around and it wasn't. I managed to proxy my way on, but still can't get on normally. Weird.

You know, I have always questioned why our borders haven't been locked down (not that it is an easy task), but the book linked on the start of this thread, "America the Vulnerable." has given me some considerable insight into why that might actually be a bad idea.

It would be hard for me to do the author justice in his argument with a quick post here, but a good quick quote follows:

Security solutions focus only on the most visible manifestations of a threat will end up as short-term fixes that generate long-term problems

The author goes on to talk about how the way we tried to harden the SW border during the 90s actually ended up creating professional 'armies' on both sides that created better techniques for smuggling/etc. The hardening of the boarder has also made it less attractive for long-haul truckers to want to go through border crossings. Instead, an industry of minimum wage short-haul truckers are assigned to the task of hauling goods about 10 miles, and sitting through the back-up on the border. Studies have found that these types of individuals are much more likely to be corrupted by someone, or a group, with money who wants something taken across.

I guess locking down the boarder sounds like a good idea, but I don't think it's quite that simple.

That must be part of the equation that keeps GWB in his current mindset about immigration and illegals.

On the other hand, checking out the main thread a minute or two ago, this was posted:

I think the arrests are a good sign, because we are getting would be terrorists off the street. I also worry a lot about the individuals the FBI was nervous about last year. These guys have a history of allowing certain people to get arrested, as to keep authorities off the track of the real event.

Interesting, the stream of non-Mexicans seems to be ever on the increase.

This is part of the problem with the borders though, they are way to long to protect completely. We harden the known entry points, and they find another way in. Why come through the locked door, if you can smash a window?

I would like to see drones used on the border more, though people will cry about something in that regard im sure... We need overlapping security measures, not super duper security in one location, and nothing in another. I think increased vigilance of the public can go a long way, but there is sometimes a fine line between vigilance and vigilanteism.
