CHICAGO -- A business traveler on Austrian Airlines boards a flight from Vienna to Warsaw and, once airborne, he opens his IBM ThinkPad notebook computer and connects to the Boeing 767 aircraft's wireless fidelity network. He sends e-mail and surfs the Web, keeping in contact with colleagues throughout Europe.
By early next year, that scenario -- announced just a few weeks ago in Paris -- will become a reality, experts told UPI's Wireless World. Working with a system called Connexion, developed by Boeing's business unit, Austrian Airlines will be among the first European carriers to offer in-flight Internet service to its passengers. Cuts both ways... Some day Big Brother will wonder what you are reading...
No he won't.
Just think... a running commentary next time the ROP tries funny-business aboard an airliner.
And they are just a minuscule percentage of the total internet.
My guess is 0.000000001%
Can they make all cell phones ring all at once?
This is interesting, but hardly new. While flying Lufthansa to Austria in February, there was the availabiilty to access the net. The price was absurd, something like $50.00 to stay connected, but it was available.
I think the next issue is going to be the ability to have a full size laptop fold into the size of a business card holder, with a full size screen, which gives complete privacy.
(not those silly useless goggles) The idea is to make computers so portable they are as ubiquitous to a people's always carry "stuff" as a wrist watch or wallet.
there was a child kidnap alert service which wanted to do something like that. It was essentially the same as the movie "Farenheit 451" where the residents were ordered to stand out side and look for Montague.
Yes, Lufthansa already has this system. I don't think it is $50, but more like $30. For an entry-level technology, that is very appealing to the business traveller.
Unfortunately, our domestic airlines do not see the value of such a system and want to implement a more useless alternative that is slower and uses ground-based antennas. And you wonder why they are bleeding money!
And the unsuspecting Mulim businessman's computer case, made of plastic explosive, explodes in mid-air at a WI-FI signal bounced off a sattellite from somewhere in Muslimloonistan.
Ain't technology cool.
More time to stay connected to Free Republic!!!!
And this can't happen today with a satellite phone in an airplane?!
If you're afraid of technology, get off the internet and go back to stone tablets.
Do you realize you just made the same gun-control argument we hear from the left every day?
It might be used for bad, so we need to get rid of it.
The fact that it is used far more for good (both WiFi and firearms) is irrelevant to negative nabobs like you.
Lighten up and don't be so touchy and defensive. I'm here on my trusty DSL, aren't I?
I'm just so sick and tired of people who react to new ideas and technology with negativism. I believe in positive thinking and leave the pessimism to the liberals.
