Several bloggers have drawn attention to a strange lead in a Washington Post story about the Terri Schiavo autopsy results. The June 16 Post story by David Brown said that "Terri Schiavo died of the effects of a profound and prolonged lack of oxygen to her brain on a day in 1990, but what caused that event isn't known and may never be, the physician who performed her autopsy said

Under Florida law, artificial feeding tubes are considered medical treatment which can be refused by the patient. In 1990, when Terri supposedly made these remarks, feeding tubes were normal care. Why would she have thought they weren't if no one else did?
The alternative would seem to be forcing feeding tubes on people who do not want them. Do you favor that?
This was never an issue until 1999. And are you suggesting that someone would WANT to be dehydrated to death?
Terminally ill patients often cannot tolerate food and hydration. But what of those that are healthy, as Terri was?

You'd better pray that you never need a feeding tube someday....for whatever reason.

That anyone can say with a straight face, (and actually try to convince thinking people,) that feeding tubes constitute *artificial life support machines*, makes me bust a gut. I suppose feeding tubes just naturally grow out of a person's stomach when they are unable to ingest food and hydration orally.

I believe that people have the right to refuse medical treatment. I believe people have the right to have their advance medical directives honored.

Not exactly disinterested parties are they. But the Schindlers are objective sources?

I suppose feeding tubes just naturally grow out of a person's stomach when they are unable to ingest food and hydration orally. It's normal for a court to order that nothing be given orally? And police guards are posted in the room to make certain?

And are you suggesting that someone would WANT to be dehydrated to death? Yes, in preference to being forcibly kept alive in a PVS state for decades on end, with no chance for recovery.

Then why not Terri? Why was it right to kill her? Why would it have been wrong to honor her desire to live? Is it just your desires that should be honored?

Don't tell me you say that with a straight face. You are claiming that feeding tubes are not artificial. If they aren't artificial, then what are they?

The world is upside down.
It's official. I think a probate judge ruled it so.

Yes, in preference to being forcibly kept alive in a PVS state for decades on end, with no chance for recovery. If she was TRULY PVS, how was she suffering? Those who believe she should have died always say it was awful to make her live that way and then insist she was PVS. That makes NO sense.

Why would it have been wrong to honor her desire to live? It is nothing more than your baseless opinion -- the opinion of a person who never knew Terri -- that she wanted to live under these circumstances. The court ruled that there was clear and convincing evidence that this was NOT her wish.
You claim to want to honor her desires, but you reject out of hand that she might actually have wanted not to be kept alive in this manner.

If she was TRULY PVS, how was she suffering? The more pertinent question is, if it truly were her wish not to be kept alive in such a state, would honor her wish?

You are claiming that feeding tubes are not artificial. If they aren't artificial, then what are they? If feeding tubes are artificial and unnatural then so are pace makers, colostomies, dialysis, oxygen and on and on. Where do you draw the line? Who gets to live or die because "it's artificial"?
