I've read quite a few different opinions. Have you seen it?

Thanks, but I'll wait a while. Heard ecstatic reviews for AI as well. That turned out to be a rather large turd. As I understand it, Tom Cruise is divorced from Miranda Otto. If you can suspend disbelief enough for that, I'm sure alien invasion is easy to swallow.

little in the way of character development, and nothing truly develops in the plot.

That doesn't sound very promising to me.

There's another HG Wells's War of the Worlds by Pendragon Films, an indie, that sticks to the Victorian story by Wells pretty faithfully.

The Spielberg version is a remake of the movie based on Orson Well's adaptation of H G's original.

I'm going to see the Pendragon film first, then maybe the Speilberg one when it comes out on DVD and I can watch it for free from the local library.

Well, I saw it at the first matinee this morning, and I was'nt impressed. The special effects were dazzling, but the story line left much to be desired. I think maybe I'm simply not a sci-fi fan.

Just got back from it. It's the most preposterous movie I've seen in a while.

Disney's Incredible Journey with people.

They have to have Morgan Freeman's narration to try explain what happened at the end.

Save your money and rent 1953's original film version. Much, much better

Just saw it. I thought it was very good, a solid and frightening 50s style space-aliens-attack flick but with modern effects. Good creepy art design with some nice icky touches. You know the plot, but there are a few surprises.

I didn't see any political messages in the movie. Xenophobia maybe. <grin>

My pardner is going to see it tonight, my only question will be does Tom Cruise ever stop grinning?

Metro-sexual and looney Scientologist Cruise portraying a blue-collar dockworker? Reason enough for me to avoid this movie like the plague...

I saw the film tonight and here's my critique...

It gets lots of things right, but the story is incomplete. All three of us just sat there at the end feeling unsatisfied. As an aside, The "big name" star was just OK. Little girl stole the show.

I concur.

Saw it at 2PM EST and I realize it's still with me past 10:30PM.

My recommendation: Go to the theater of your choice early on a weekday. Then see 'War of the Worlds,' next 'Star Wars,' and then 'Batman' all on the same day. If you are clever you may even be able to see all three films for the same admission charge. Great fun? Yes! But your poor head will be spinning from all the special effects, weird characters and strange plot twists.

You will emerge from the theater a changed person. Your mind will have evolved to the next level. For the following three days you will be confused about what you are doing here on this planet. You will be asking yourself, "What is my mission here on earth?" Not to worry. The condition is not permanent. It is easily cured by a few beers with friends at your local tavern.

i have absolutely no desire to see this film, though i am a huge film buff and frequent goer. i just can't stand the thought of seeing all those "people" squashed like bugs. the whole idea makes me sick, though i am intrigued by the cgi.

i wonder when hollywood figures out that their stars' bad behavior is reflected in box office receipts.

i wanted to see "cinderella man," which sounds like a perfect family film, but russell crowe's behavior just made me SICK. you would think he wouldn't want to alienate his target audience....families.

We just saw it this afternoon. It really was a good movie!! As flaky as Tom Cruise may be, he acted well in this one.

Yes. Very intense. There's none of the winking fun of INDEPENDENCE DAY. Just Spielberg returning to his gift of scaring the pants off you.

But what was the most disturbing scene may not have been anything with the aliens or the tripods. It was the moment when they're in the minivan and society finally breaks down. Almost like a George Romero flick at that point. If Augustine was right in his observation that man is the beast with the angel inside, the angel done fled and is cowering in a basement somewhere as Americans realize that the chips are down and not getting back up - and in fact are incinerated all over the poker table.

And no doubt that's what it would be like in reality.

The only thing I want to know is who wins.

I wonder if the Left (Robbins, Cruise, Speilberg) will at least allow us to fight back against aliens, if not terrorists.

Hmm, Joyce Kilhawik of channel 4 Boston news said most of the film was really scary, but the writing at the end was lame and the audience actually laughed. She liked 99 per cent of the film, but was ultimately disappointed.

One other comment. The ending that some have problems with is the original ending that Wells used! I think it all worked though! Very entertaining.
