China activates bomb shelters

Intelligence sources suspect reopening to public is part of strategic deception

China's decision to open up massive bomb shelters to the public, ostensibly to provide a respite from summer heat, has U.S. intelligence analysts concerned about a possible strategic deception by Beijing, reports Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

The government made a high-profile public announcement, carried by the official Xinhua news agency, this week that bomb shelters in central Chongqing would be opened to the public to allow residents to cool off during a heat wave in which temperatures are reaching into the 90s.

Specifically, the announcement said, the government had decided to open 24 cool, underground air-raid shelters, most of them built in the 1960s and 1970s.

"A heat wave with high humidity has hit Chongqing since last week, making life unbearable to residents, many of whom only have electric or palm-leaf fans to cool off," the Xinhua report explained.

I think that the real import of the article is that if you believe these analysts, then the Chinese apparently have an intent to engage in nuclear war, and perhaps they think that these shelters will work. It really says nothing about whether they actually will.

Personally, I think both of the conclusions are nutso. More likely, if it means anything, it simply means that they've figured out that like Jung-Il, they can manipulate the American thought processes and cause histeria over here by doing meaningless things like this.

Where in China is "central Chongqing" and how important is it? [i.e. is it across Taiwan, or does that area include anything particularly important in terms of economical or political infrastructure?]

Perhaps...

But the Chinese have a billion people and little regard for life. The only thing that matters to the Chinese government is perpetuation of the Moaist state...no matter the cost.

The Chinese, just like chinese drivers in this country, and unlike Russians, have no common sense. I am afraind they could legitamize a nuclear first strike against, perhaps, a carrier battle group while they engage Taiwan...they'd expect a retaliation in kind from us.

A nuke war with China could play out.

I am not saying you're wrong, however, I do think that China is like N.Korea in that it likes to play these mind games. The little hints they throw our way do not necessarily reflect what they are actually thinking. It's all calculated for effect.

It seems like the article is claiming that the chinese are doing this, moving the folks in and out of these things, regardless of heat, so as to throw us off, since we are watching people's movement by satelite....jist of it????

Of course the stuff is a foot thick on top of your skin, and you can't move. But hey, you survived the nuke war.

I have heard some weird theories in my life, but this is a lulu. China has fought to propaganda wars during its history; one for internal use and one for external use. There has been of late a number of disturbances within China and the opening of the bomb shelters could be for domestic consumption. The quick response to the floods and the opening bomb shelters are design to show the beneficence of Communist Party. The number one fear of the Communist Party isn't Taiwanese independence, but a popular uprising in the same vane as Mao's peoples revolution.

My wife got me a new Lazy Boy for Father's Day. If I want to stay awake and read or watch something on tv, I can not lift up the foot rest.

Great picture of me, except my Lazy Boy is a deep purple. My wife won't let me pick the colors of furniture. I might buy yellow or orange.

Hmmm. Why do you suppose they bothered to rescue the people caught in the floods last week?

where do you think the Chicoms got the missile technology to be able to hit the United States

Outsourcing

U.S. satellite manufacturers would send their satellites to China, where they were launched into orbit by Chinese missiles and U.S. technology in order to save money.

It's free trade, it's good for us, right?

This has nothing to do with whether there was a nuke war or not.... which there were in Japan and simulated in the desert.

But maybe the more relevant point you want to avoid is that THERE WILL BE A NUKE WAR AND YOU ARE NOT PREPARED.

If casual usage of the shelters throws us off Chinese military activity it is, at best, a side benefit. I agree with other posters that the intent is probably to quell internal unrest. If there is a military purpose to these recent actions, China's greatest nuclear threats comes from Korea or civil war, rather than us, IMHO.

The comment to which you refer comes from an unknown US Intelligence source; You can always find anonymous intelligence sources to say just about anything.
