MISHAHDA, Iraq - A U.S. military helicopter crashed in a field north of Baghdad on Monday morning, witnesses and the U.S. military said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The crash occurred in Mishahda, 20 miles north of the capital, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said. The helicopter was in flames on the ground.

U.S. Helicopter Shot Down in Iraq

The U.S. military has confirmed to FOX News that an Apache helicopter (search) was shot down near Taji, Iraq. A smoke trail was seen before it slammed into the ground, killing the pilot, gunner and both passengers aboard.

BAGHDAD , Iraq — Two Task Force Baghdad Soldiers were killed around 11 a.m. June 27 when their AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed northwest of Baghdad .
The names of the Soldiers are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
The incident remains under investigation.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military said Monday it plans to expand its prisons across Iraq to hold as many as 16,000 detainees, as the relentless insurgency shows no sign of letup one year after the transfer of sovereignty to Iraqi authorities.
The plans were announced on a day three U.S. Army soldiers were killed — two pilots whose helicopter crashed north of Baghdad and a soldier who was shot in the capital. At least four Iraqis died in a car bomb attack in the capital.
The AH-64 crashed in Mishahda, 20 miles north of the capital, and witness Mohammed Naji told Associated Press Television News he saw two helicopters flying toward Mishahda when "a rocket hit one of them and destroyed it completely in the air."

My prayers are going up for the brave aircrew killed.
Those guys are our guardian angels when firefights break out. One of our convoys was hit by an IED and a soldier killed. The Apaches flew cover over the area and kept the insurgents at bay during the MEDEVAC of the wounded. I owe them a round of their favorite beverage many times over.
