'I'm passionate about life -'CRUISE 'WAR OF WORLDS'
MSNBC ^ | 6/24/05 | Today show

...Lauer: Katie has mentioned that she is embracing, or at least exposing herself and opening herself up to, Scientology. At this stage in your life, could you be with someone who doesn't have an interest?

Cruise: You know, Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay. Scientology is something—

Lauer: So, it doesn't replace religion.

Cruise: It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being. It gives you tools you can use to apply to your life.

We asked Cruise to explain his recent comments regarding Brooke Shields. Cruise created a firestorm when he criticized Shields for revealing that she went into therapy and took antidepressants to deal with her postpartum depression. Cruise has said that, as a Scientologist, he doesn't believe in psychiatric medicine.

Cruise: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology.

And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.

Lauer: But Tom, if she said that this particular thing helped her feel better, whether it was the antidepressants or going to a counselor or psychiatrist, isn't that enough?

Cruise: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today, where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs...

I actually just saw a news interview with Steinem in which she still refers to Bale as her stepson. Apparently she worried about his weight loss for that movie he did in which he weighed 121 pounds.

My grandmother had a degenerative mental disease and I noted years ago that physical activity made her a lot sharper than drugs and a closet at the old folks home.

No question that physical and mental activities that stimulate are a help. For some people, however, medical intervention is required.

Plus the founder, L. Ron Hubbard, was a sex addict who contracted veneral disease. What a role model.

I have a family member who has severe depression and anxiety...and he works physically hard... outside most of the time and he has his entire life.

Going on meds was when we saw the biggest and best changes in his quality of life. In my family it's soooo tracibly genetic it isn't funny. Those who get treatment (and meds) flourish. Those who go the 'it isn't happening' or 'think happy thoughts' route crash and burn (literally).

Treating mental health issues requires a multi-faceted approach. IMHO

Medved is trashing Cruise right now on this topic. He said there is no correlation between acting and intelligence (a bit of hyperbole there) - that some of the finest actors around are incredibly stupid and should not be taken seriously on serious issues. lol!

Ken Kesey took shock treatments while working at an asylum. He also tasted real LSD.

This was around 1962 (maybe earlier).

Yea, Kesey did that in 1959. Government Acid from which came One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

After he came back from New York to promote his next book, he spent a considerable amount of time in Santa Cruz.

And was a real Johnny Acidseed.

And, yea it was real LSD.

The irony of his dissing psychiatry is astounding.

One of the first things they do to get you "clear" is a deprogramming that is psychiatry in essence.

The mark sits down for hours and talks. And talks. And talks. They are encouraged to tell every aspect of their whole life. It is all recorded and saved.

Their stated purpose is to rid you of all that you have been, so you can be "clear".

But then they have you.

This guy is off his rocker.
