After California quakes, attention turns to New Madrid zone
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Recent earthquake activity in California has prompted fresh speculation about "the big one" -- an enormous quake along California's West Coast.
A few have been large enough to shake the faith of skeptics -- a magnitude 7.2 quake on June 15, followed two days later by a magnitude 6.7, both off the coast near the California-Oregon border.
Doomsayers have warned about the Pacific Coast for years. But only a few have raised concerns about an area with the potential to be more dangerous than California -- the New Madrid seismic zone in the center of the country.
It's a 120-mile-long system of three to five faults stretching from 40 miles northwest of Memphis to southern Illinois, near Cairo.

But New Madrid already has spawned four earthquakes this year of similar size, along with nearly 100 smaller quakes. Patterson said such activity may or may not be the precursor to a much larger quake.
Three large quakes happened in the winter of 1811-1812, and strong rumbles hit several times until near the end of the 19th century.
These quakes were felt keenly over more than 2 million square miles -- people in Boston, Massachusetts, felt one or more of the three main quakes, the first of which struck in three shocks on the morning of December 16, 1811.
Two more large shocks struck the area -- on January 23, 1812, and the largest and most devastating of all hit February 7, 1812, destroying the town of New Madrid.
By contrast, the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, California, was felt over 60,000 square miles.

It's caused by GLOBAL WARMING...no, then IT'S BUSH'S FAULT...no, then SUV POLLUTION is causing it...no, it's revenge of ABUSED ANIMALS....no,...
We must stop plate tectonics at all costs!

Good gracious, we heard about this every 2-5 years! Just wait, we'll have another prediction, just in time for every homeowner in the area to consider buying earthquake insurance.
I grew up in Paris,Tennessee, less than 100 miles from the actual fault line and was well aware of the potential for damage from shocks there. In fact we had a shock hit one Sunday morning in 1964 when I was in church and at first the immediate thought was that this was surely the Second Coming.
The New Madrid quake of almost two centuries ago was massive. If the same one hit today, millions could die. There are a number of good-sized cities today in that area that didn't exist then.
" It's Not My Fault... It's New Madrid's... "
It's only been what? 200 years since the New Madrid blew big enough to rock the world? Nah. I'm not buying into this hype about a newer "big one building on the New Madrid". The big ones are going to happen elsewhere around the world which haven't had a major "plate movement" in a long, long time.
To its credit, however, USGS also does great stuff in re "being prepared". That's a good thing to do REGARDLESS of "potential" earthquakes.
Where can I find seismograph pictures of the US with real-time data?

Memphis TN would be devastated.
the most serious data I have encountered yet suggests that really large quakes have occurred around 500 years apart in that area. See the article below and the last graph at the end of the article: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/nmsz/1811-1812.php
The second link covers more of the social/historical details of the great quakes. Observers included Davy Crockett, and James Audubon who was tromping the woods and marshes looking for birds to paint, and others, all made records of their experiences and observations. What has not been included in much of the US sources is that there was also a very powerful earthquake in Venezuela during that period that killed at least 20,000 people.

Decided to check the Venezuela quake and found this article. The author also tries to tie this in with the events 13,000 years ago that triggered the Younger Dryas cooling event. SC - Post the book if you want.

Good idea, it’s been a while since I’ve done that.
Meanwhile, for ****s and giggles:

Giggles indeed. How can the alignment of the planets possible cause more than a micro-millionth effect on our earth. Don’t people know that the effect of rays decreases with the square of the distance between the two objects as well as their size?
Right, laugh at that -- and the insistence that 100 ppm of CO2 can make the atmosphere heat up, melt the icecaps, and drown everybody.
Supposedly, we in Virginia were able to feel and hear an earthquake that occurred in Missouri last week.
My main concern with the CO2 rise is the acidification of the oceans. The question is how acid an environment can fish live in and how fast can they adapt? Large loss of fish would create famine conditions. People can always move to higher ground. In fact one person I know has already liquidated their property in Miami and moved to higher ground near Orlando.
