Natalee left her cellphone in her bag at the hotel. It would not work on the island (so she thought). The one person who stayed behind was able to reprogram it so that it would work in Aruba and he used it to call Natalee mom with until they got the island.

this same person who stayed behind also used it to call Natalee's friends to find out what they knew. That is how they found out about Joran and when Natalee parents got to Aruba this one person had enough info to give to Natalee's parents The person is the chaperone that stayed behind.

oh thank you brigette. Could Natalee have had someone else's cell phone with her?

Even if N had had the phone and it had worked that night, would dialing 911 be the same? Still, it's weird the way all the threads link up. Her phone, thought unusable, used to contact her mom after she's vanished.
