I saw on 'Dateline' the other night that it is legal to purchase and own a .50 caliber long gun in all 50 states (although California looks poised to outlaw them). I don't know why I thought of that just now. Sorry for going off topic.

You're not exactly off topic. Property rights, gun rights, rights as Americans...all the same kettly of fish.

Eminent domain for roads is a well established "public good". This decision wouldn't likely affect that for your parents neighborhood.

Once the bypass is in the neighborhood may be more valuable as commerical propoerty.....that's when this decision might kick in.

It's bad enough that the govt can seize property for govt issues.

But now they can seize it for private developments.

This is not right.

As long as we keep voting for RINOs (Bush and McCain) then we can expect our freedoms to be taken away.

It's official, we now have an ILLEGITIMATE government. So that leaves one question...... Is it time YET???

You're exactly right, the goverment would never do anything to lessen it's power. Today is a black day in America, private property rights have been struck down.

You'd probably have more luck going through your state legislature and ban this in your state. Some state constitutions might already ban it.

I think on the grand scale of history, today is far worse.

O'Conner wrote a stinging dissent in favor of private property rights.

Probably because she is from Arizona, where the landowners don't take kindly to the government intruding onto their land.

Facism just went from baby steps to walking on its own, this will boom as Wal-mart and other corps now play small towns against one another and each town rushes to seize prime property from rightful owners. The SCOTUS should be renamed the High Court of Zimbabwe. Its what we get for worshipping economic growth, and we have become little more then well fed cattle on government approved housing development.

"Well My family is now screwed. Our property is going to be seized by the cityhall next door to us now."

No more so now than you otherwise would have been absent this decision. An expansion of city hall could be easily construed as for the public good for these purposes......

Thanks...Im not surprised at the breakdown.

These are dark days. One more lib / big gov advocate on the SCOTUS and I fear much will be lost rather quickly.

This is why EVERY judicial appointmnet Bush makes...and the pubs get confirmed is CRITICAL.

I didn't really think there was a real estate bubble until now. This should certainly suck the value out of "private" property rights. UNBELIEVABLE!! Our constitution is officially dead.

People everywhere property is wrongfully threatened should stand shoulder to shoulder and resist the wrongful taking. We either hang together or we will all surely hang separately.

I thought they were already doing this with the confiscatory property tax rates that magically go up 10% every year. Note to self: Collect more ammo...
