Sens. Kennedy, Corzine & Rep. Weiner Introduce Legislation to Expose Wal-Mart...

-- Wake-Up Wal-Mart's "Make Wal-Mart Care About Health Care" Campaign Helps Sponsor the "Health Care Accountability Act" to Hold Wal-Mart Accountable

On Wednesday, June 22, at 1:45 p.m., Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Jon Corzine and Rep. Anthony Weiner will hold a press conference to announce the introduction of the Health Care Accountability Act (HCAA).

The HCAA will expose a growing and costly national problem of large profitable companies, like Wal-Mart, shifting their health care costs onto taxpayers. Wal-Mart's relentless pursuit of corporate greed has come at a high price for their workers health care. More than 600,000 Wal-Mart workers are not covered by the company's health care plan. Poverty level wages combined with high deductibles, costly premiums and strict eligibility requirements force tens of thousands of Wal-Mart's workers, spouses and dependents onto public health care programs designed for needy families and children.

HCAA will require states to disclose which employers have a high number of employees on public health care assistance, like Medicaid. The Bill will also help determine the extent to which taxpayers are subsidizing the health care costs of large, profitable corporations, like Wal-Mart.

WHAT: Press Conference on the Kennedy-Weiner Health Care Accountability Act

WHERE: Russell Park -- corner of Constitution and Delaware, Washington, D.C.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 22, 1:45 p.m.

WHO: Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sen. Jon Corzine, Rep. Anthony Weiner, Georgia State Rep. Sen. Nan Grogan Orrock, UFCW International President Joe Hansen

BACKGROUND: Wal-Mart, a company with $10 billion dollars in net profit last year, fails to provide health care for more than 52 percent of its 1.3 million workers. In 12 of the 13 states where data has been released and analyzed, Wal-Mart workers rely on public health care, like Medicaid, more than the workers of any other employer.

As a result, in state after state, Wal-Mart is directly shifting its health care responsibilities to American taxpayers. Central to the campaign will be a grassroots effort to build public and political pressure against Wal-Mart to take responsibility for its part in America's health care crisis, as well as a call for legislative action to ensure Wal-Mart -- not taxpayers -- pays its fair share for health care in each and every state.

The "Make Wal-Mart Care About Health Care" campaign is part of a nationwide effort to change Wal-Mart led by wakeupwalmart.com.

They are such good proponents of the Consitution and States' Rights.

Humiliating/Blacklisting private companies and ORDERING it to be done by the states; very un-American if you ask me.

And it makes you wonder what happens if a state DOESN'T disclose...

Well that would be the end to Wal-Marts FALLING PRICES! How will the Dem's constituents feel about having to pay more at their favorite store? Should go over like a lead balloon.

The "Hate Everything About Wal-Mart" crowd of FR will undoubtedly have a field day with this press conference.

Where do they get off thinking they can do this? They can't order a private company to institute healthcare, or are they so stupid as to think HillaryCare was actually passed ten years ago? What rights will any private citizen or business have if they get away with this? That old slobbering fool Kennedy and that complete idiot Corzine are a danger to this county. I don't know Weiner (or is that "whiner"?) but he sounds bad, too.

Read the headline and was sure this was from scrappleface. LOL... investigating Walmart. Yup... right up there with Gitmo. Actually WalMart may be worse than Gitmo.

My advice to Democrats... Pretend you're adults.

What they fail to mention is the fact that most of those workers are part time students and retirees. I don't know of any company that provides those benefits to part timers.

What a totally politically motivated, slanted piece of garbage this bill is.

How will the Dem's constituents feel about having to pay more at their favorite store?

For one thing, Democrats loathe Wal-Mart, for two reasons, Wal-Mart contributes largely to the Republicans, and the Democrats are always "concerned" about health care, but they're not. Their concern is completely phony.

Expose Wal-Mart? Does that include Hillary's board of directors position several years ago?

My thoughts exactly. If anything, this is a waste of taxpayer time and money.

Last I heard no one forced Walmart employee to work there.
As far as I'm concerned they give jobs to the unemployed.
25 years ago a starter job was Baskin & Robbin, 31 flavors Ice Cream(yes me) Now it's Walmart. I think the Dems don't want Walmart because the poor save money, that's not a good way to keep the poor down.

"They" just want the health care taxes, not the health care.

How did Wal'Mart get on the Dems sh*t, accidently contributing a few more cents to the Repubs.??

Or maybe the Dems are Targeting Wal'Mart on behalf of their French owned competitor. It's interesting how the Dems are always ready to declare open season on any successful American owned enterprise.

What's the difference between Wal-Mart and the big dairies, farms, packing plants, contruction companies, etc that hire illegal aliens? Think I'll call Teddy's office tomorrow to ask that.

If government wants health care than it is their job to fund it, not tell companies it's their job. Who do they think they are anyway? Democrats?
