In the south farmers and anyone who works out in the sun are often refered to as a "redneck" and "good old boy" usually means that you're a good guy or easy going in temperment.

The term has morphed. Rednecks are (were) mostly Scotch Irish Presbyterians, named after the red cloth they wore around their neck. I believe they mostly settled in Kentucky and what later became W. Virginia, though I might be wrong on that.

Kind of an ugly thread, defending this guy, I thought I'd change the subject.

Going by your logic, Saddam shouldnt be tried for crimes against Kurds because they happened long time back !

More than the race factor, do you feel less motivated to condemn this deviously despicable person because he killed a bunch of "liberals" ?

As far as 'Southerners & Northerners', how about just plan Americans, since our enemies overseas don't really give a damn what state an American happens to live or was from.

I think most Americans ought to realize that by now.. esp after 9-11.. few in ME understand the not-so-subtle cultural differences between south/north Americans.

Under the pretense of "fighting political correctness", many racists are sneaking in to the conservative movement.

"less motivated to condemn ... because he killed a bunch of liberals"?

No. It's an equally outrageous crime no matter whether the victims were liberals or conservatives. However, I'd point out that the liberals are so interested in this case because liberals were killed. If it had been conservative activists, the case probably wouldn't have been reopened, the MSM wouldn't be nearly as interested, and the liberals wouldn't care as much. It should be obvious from my posts that I am not condoning the action against the civil-rights workers. It was a horrific crime. And obviously someone murdered them. I question whether it was Edgar Ray Killen. Again, you don't give a man what amounts to a life sentence when he was only convicted of manslaughter. The only excuse for this would be if he were a danger to society.

It dismays me that so many FReepers have no interest in the points I'm making. Yesterday's outrageous, totalitarian ruling in Kelo v. New London should demonstrate what horrible danger we're in from Big Government. The Killen trial and sentencing has Orwellian aspects. It is not a defense of the defendant to point this out.

"By your logic, Saddam shouldn't be tried for crimes against the Kurds because they happened a long time back."

That is utter krap. I have no problem with a trial for crimes from a long time ago. My problem was with the questionable evidence and the inability of the jurors to see the witnesses against Killen. He had a constitutional right as an American citizen to SEE his accusers in any trial. This was violated.

No trial is needed in Saddam's case. His guilt is completely obvious. And he is a mortal enemy of the U.S., not a U.S. citizen with rights.

Thanks. I appreciate the support. There seem to be FReepers on this thread who swallow the liberal line on this case.

My teenage sons (here in Kentucky) call some kids "rednecks", and amazingly, they call others "cowboys". The rednecks are the racists who go around calling anyone a little different "faggots". The cowboys (and this is according to my kids) wear Redwings and Levis (like the rednecks) but they aren't racists. I never hear them say "good ole boy".

I think sometimes terms change with each generation.

It is an ugly thread. It happens on the Emmett Till threads too.

"But there are those who continue to breed hatred right under your nose."

There are only two logical reasons why the one's denying the ongoing hate.

#1: They are like minded and know admitting it on here will get themselves booted out.

#2: These might be the very same which escape reality by pretending a threat does not exist, similar to those who actually state, 'nobody is threatening U.S., just leave the poor Islamic terrorists alone and they we leave us alone' Sorry it does not function like that. If this nation had adopted that attitude of appeasement we would have lost WWII.

Ugly is right. On threads like this one gets to know whose who.

Interesting, I didn't know that. In my post I was only pointing out that if you're going to call someone a racist or bigot do so, but don't use terms that sterotype Southerns and people from rural parts of the country.

In another post the term "hick" was said to be the northern "redneck" word for racist. In Virginia the word is used to descibe someone who is from the country or acting uncouth. I've never heard it used in a racial way before.

I don't see anyone here defending Killen or what he did; just stating their opinions on if the sentence was fair and proven after all these years.

I'm in my early 30's so it could be generation, but regional too. Two great examples of why people should be direct and call a bigot and racist what they are, and not terms that have different meaning for people in different parts of the country. It's just another form of stereotype; and as I stated before the only people I see using it in a racial way are the liberals and those urban types who love to put down the South and rural people.

I actually, live and grew up in the city, but my parents are from small towns and I have other family members who have farms. I’ve heard "good ole boy" all my life from both whites and blacks and never in a racial way.
