Peres: Israel should hand PA guns to restore order
By Amos Harel and Yuval Azoulay, Haaretz Correspondents, and Haaretz Service
Israel should transfer to the Palestinian Authority lights arms as part of a series of goodwill gestures Prime Minster Ariel Sharon intends to present PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in their meeting next week, Vice Premier Shimon Peres told Israel Radio on Friday.
The Palestinians "are apparently facing many problems," Peres said. "The light arms are really needed in order to place law and order and to fight Hamas."
The Vice Premier did not agree that the PA's weapons, which in the past were used against Israeli targets, threat Israel in a substantial way.

"Light arms do not pose a threat to Israel. The threat on Israel comes on the one hand from a war with tanks and airplanes and on the other hand from terrorists," Peres went on saying.
"It is not the guns that threaten us, but the suicide bombers," he said.
On Thursday evening the coordinator of government activities in the territories, General Yosef Mishlav, and PA Civil Affairs Minister Mohammed Dahlan met in Tel Aviv to discuss further measures aimed at alleviating the everyday lives of Palestinians.
The measures include the easing of Palestinians' entry into Israel through the separation fence and from the Gaza Strip. In addition, Israel will increase the operational hours of the Karni crossing into the Gaza Strip.
The two sides are also set to reach an agreement about the renewal of "summer vacation" visits, in which Palestinians living in Arab states visit their families in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Israel hands PA maps of settlements On Thursday evening, security sources said that Israel has recently handed the PA detailed maps of the civilian infrastructure of Gaza Strip and northern West Bank settlements slated for evacuation under the disengagement plan.
The maps, which were handed over to the PA in preparation for next Tuesday's planned meeting between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, cover roads, electricity and water networks as well as other infrastructure information.

Shimon Peres has been hitting the Manischewitz too hard IMO.
"The Vice Premier did not agree that the PA's weapons, which in the past were used against Israeli targets, threat Israel in a substantial way."
Key word being "Substantial"
The Palis have lots of problems, but obtaining weapons isn't one of them.
Hummm. A rock & bottle buy-back program. It just might work!
I remember one time a few years ago some Palestinians broke into a house and shot and killed everyone there. Small arms no threat? Yeah right.
Has anyone seen Jimmy Carter and Shimon Peres in a room at the same time. Inquiring minds would like to know.
Try saying that to David Hatuel, whose pregnant wife and four daughters (including 2-year-old toddler) were shot at point blank range.
Now here's a brain-dead vegetable who desperately needs his feeding tube removed and his pie hole shut.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel ping list.
WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
He must be taking war strategy ideas from the dems.
Perhaps the guns they are taking from the settlers can be given directly to the pali-terrorists, or maybe just left behind in the homes that they are being forced out since they are not planning on destroying the homes, all in goodwill.
L
Muzzle first.
I Can't believe that this old carpetbagger still hasn't learned the lesson from Oslo in 1993!!!
Mr. Peres, in case that you have forgotten, in 1993 you and Rabin handed over to PA tons of guns and those were used to kill hundrads of Jews and until this day Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Tanzim and Fatah use IDF's guns to murder Jews!
History always repeats itself, because leftists never learn from it.
Peres has got the first two down, but he's having significant trouble with the third. What a maroon.
"ISRAELI police have come up with plans to place bags of pig lard on buses in a bid to deter Palestinian militants from carrying out suicide attacks, the Maariv daily reported."
I'm for an all out lard offensive! Free pigskin footballs thrown in for their kids too.
Peres was most instrumental in arming the Palestinians after Oslo. Thousands have been killed as a result. He and Beilin will find themselves explaining many things to G-d when the judgement comes.
That was Peres' and Beilin's plan all along--they are the most severe self hating Jews that I have ever seen. He reminds you of Milton's "Paradise Lost", where Satan said that "It is better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven." Peres has never, or never will admit that he made a huge mistake and has cost the lives of thousands for it.
I have an idea about "Israel's use of guns" and "Peres."
Israel should convict Peres of treason and execute him by a firing squad.
OH, but I forgot, Israel does not have a death penalty. Israel just has a death wish.
I see that Peres:
1) Has been mixing up his medication again.
2) Has been forgetting to eat his bran, therefore, has clogged up his brain.
3) Is in serious need of a brain transplant.
4) Is in the final stages of terminal senility.
Or, as Bugs Bunny would say of him, "what a maroon!"
