What doesn't change is that her parents wanted to care for her and keep her alive, whatever her state, while her husband wanted her to die. Why Schiavo was so intent on letting her die, is what was, and remains, suspect. Just plain meanness, perhaps.
Meanness? Absolutely. But the real motive is greed. There's money involved and Michael Schiavo wanted plus to legitimize his children. Wouldn't surprise me to learn that ole Mikey was going out on Terri, playing a Scott Peterson act, before Terri "collapsed".
The words of Laertes from Hamlet popped into my head in regards to Michael Schiavo:
"A minstering angel shall my sister be, when thou liest howling."
Feller had a way with words.
Apparently, there was enough evidence to show that Terri didn't want to live in a vegetative state forever. Her wishes were deemed more important than those of her parents.
MIchael's new wife-to-be wants a Catholic wedding, so Michael needs to be a widower, not a divorcee. The Bishop down in St. Pete never lifted a finger to help Terri.
"What doesn't change is that her parents wanted to care for her and keep her alive, whatever her state, while her husband wanted her to die. "
My thoughts exactly. It matters not at all that she was blind (but watch the videos of her and YOU decide for yourself). She left no wishes written and there wasn't enough to make a decision for a reasonable court. It had to be a Michael Schiavo approved court.
I hope you wouldn't call my spouse mean for making that same call as Mr. Schiavo. It's what I would want her to do.
Or maybe he thought it was compassion. After years of rehabilitation and finally accepting that she would never get better, he knew she wouldn't have wanted to live that way and it was the last thing he could do for her. Now, I'm not saying you have to agree with that, or even understand it, but it's just as valid of an explanation as "just plain meanness."
