LARGO, Fla. -- An autopsy on Terri Schiavo backed her husband's contention that she was in a persistent vegetative state, finding that she had massive and irreversible brain damage and was blind, the medical examiner's office said Wednesday. It also found no evidence that she was strangled or otherwise abused.
But what caused her collapse 15 years remained a mystery. The autopsy and post-mortem investigation found no proof that she had an eating disorder, as was suspected at the time, Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin said.
Autopsy results on the 41-year-old brain-damaged woman were made public Wednesday, more than two months after Schiavo's death March 31 ended an internationally watched right-to-die battle between her husband and parents that engulfed the courts, Congress and the White House and divided the country.
Thogmartin also said she did not appear to have suffered a heart attack and there was no evidence that she was given harmful drugs or other substances prior to her death.
She died from dehydration, Thogmartin said.
He said she would not have been able to eat or drink if she had been given food by mouth as her parents' requested.
"Removal of her feeding tube would have resulted in her death whether she was fed or hydrated by mouth or not," Thogmartin told reporters.
He also said she was blind, because the "vision centers of her brain were dead."

Guy, I became even more skeptical when (I think it was)Dr. Baden was denied access to the autopsy. He said it was usually a professional courtesy to allow other medical examiners in but this time it was denied. Wonder why?
"Michael Schiavo told Police he awoke at 5:40am that morning and heard a loud thump."
LOL! Gotta bump this one so I can come back in a couple of hours and be entertained by what surely will be many colorful replies to your post!
any signs of violence would have healed in the decade and a half that transpired since her initial coma.
I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to discover that they found what they were looking for.....nothing.

My Dad had a heart attack 20 years ago and never new it. The doctor that did his test said he had one based upon the dead tissue and said it was at least 20 years ago.
Wow! Disappearing scars and seamlessly re-fused broken bones! It's a breakthrough in human physiology!
Was it a government school?
Cordially,
I don't need any convoluted theory to support my conclusion. I know for a fact that a living human being was starved and dehydrated to death by court order. That's the issue here; nothing else. Whether her husband abused her is the subject of a completely different debate.
By the way, wasn't the last Medical Examiner of Pinellas County, Dr. Joan Wood, forced out of her job because of allegations of corruption or incompetence? Maybe a trend could be forming.
Guess you didnt read Terri's Guardian Ad Litem report that said that was untrue. But then why bother with facts when speculation and conspiracy is so much fun.
Sure. As I said, any old cockamamie reason will do.
Why don't we line up all the unfortunate disabled people in our country and send them, prematurely, off to that "better place"?
Spare me the moralizing. You're just indulging yourself in another conspiracy theory, namely that the courts and legislature of Florida, as well as the U.S. courts, planned to murder the woman.
Fact that she couldnt see should make you wonder whether the apparent tracking of objects was random movment that just happened to coincide with the actual movement. Rembmer, Terri's parents recorded four hours and only had less than a minute of "purposeful" action recorded.
LOL
Just because the vision center of her brain was blind doesn't mean her brain couldn't have compensated somewhere else.
Read that statement over about three times and tell me what you are saying.
