ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 4-year-old boy on a family vacation died Monday afternoon after he passed out on an Epcot Center ride.

Officials said the accident happened on the Mission: SPACE ride.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on the Mission: SPACE ride, according to Disney officials. The ride simulates a launch into space by exerting g-forces on occupants.

The child reportedly passed out on the ride and paramedics responded. Witnesses reported seeing the child's mother carry him outside to a nearby bench, where paramedics were able to briefly revive him. But the child died on the way to the hospital, according to officials.

Officials shut down the ride for the rest of the day. It's not certain whether it will reopen today. Mission: SPACE opened in October 2003.

The ride has a minimum height requirement of 44 inches. The local sheriff's department said the boy met the height restriction.

The boy was on vacation from Pennsylvania with his family.

Disney released a statement saying, "We are providing support to the family and doing everything we can help them at this time."

"I think it was voted THE most obnoxious song ever written."

Probably, but a close tie is "Achey Brakey Heart".

The only good part was that Frontier Land was nearby. On my first trip to Disney, by the time we got around to IASWAA, we were all packing pirate flags/hats/cap guns, and those bobbing heads didn't have a chance.

No four year old should be forced to go on a ride like that. I blame both Disney and the parents. Too bad there can't be an age requirement for some of these rides.

There ARE G-forces, the ride is a centrifuge.

The large gray structure in the rear is the ride's centrifuge. Ten arms extend from the top of the centrifuge and connect to the capsule pods, like this one on the right.

Yes I know I corrected myself later in the thread. I was thinking of another ride I was on there.

Tragic, but not Disney's fault

The ride will probably be closed permanently even if Disney is not at fault.

As a Nurse.. I wonder if the most basic of all things was done. When the child passed out and they checked for breathing and pulse.. did they also check his AIRWAY??? Did he possibly have a piece of gum or candy or SOMETHING in his MOUTH while on the ride?? Did he choke during the ride?? When they attempted rescue breathing did the chest rise with ventilation??? (if it DID he was NOT obstructed.).. (if his chest did NOT rise with the rescue breathing attempt either his jaw was not in correct position or he was OBSTRUCTED!!!) in which case they should have followed proceedures for an unconscious choking victim).

If he was not obstructed .. I wonder if he had a pre existing cardiac condition. Possibly WPW, Brugada, Long QT syndrome. Or possibly it was caused by a neuro issues such as a coup or countercoup injury from the force of the ride.

No matter what is was though.. it is truely a sad time for the family and my prayers go out to them. It makes me wanna take my kids and hug them and not let go.
