It took off from the ft lauderdale executive airport, so its probably a small shipping company from the islands.

DC-3 is not particularly small, carried 50 passengers, I believe. The military incarnation was the C-47 of WWII fame.

Live coverage of the plane crash will be cut in order to reshow pictures of Lyndie England and the photos from ABU GRAB.

There are many charters to the Bahamas all the time, it's such a short hop...often carrying college students on field studies...I did one to Andros Isle in a DC3---my head was too hot from the heater and my feet froze...

"Large plane"

How much more journalistically imprecise can they get? Well, I suppose they could've said "crash in Ft. Lauderdale"...

Large as in airliner, or large as in 12 seat private jet? Come on, journalists, you can do better...

Cargo, probabley. Son Ace interviewed a few years ago to fly one. Some are retrofitted with turboprop engines.

I can imagine the morbid news execs troubled as to which to cover more in the next 40 minutes - the Jackson verdict or this.

I used to live a few blocks from there. Executive Airport is on Commercial Blvd, just east of Hwy 441. It sounds like the plan crashed east of there.

Did you see the pictures on MSNBC? There wasn't much plane left.

What airline would be flying that old of a plane?

We have 4 or 5 of them operating out of Tucson and nearby small fields as small cargo carriers serving smaller towns in Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico - they are pretty sturdy planes.

But the media will claim Bush did it.

To distract attention from the Jacko** verdict.Live pictures show the pilot did a good job of bringing in right down the center of the street. No houses appear damaged. Looks like an old DC twin prop--a Dakota?-- Probably an island hopper on it's last legs. I travelled all over Colombia and Panama on those when I was a kid.

Airlines don't.

Plenty of part 135 operators do, every day.

It's not uncommon for cargo carriers to fly these old planes. The airframes typically last a very long time, and it's a lot cheaper to retrofit them with new engines and avionics than it is to buy new planes.

There are actually a zillion of 'em still flying. Those things are hosses! There is alot of airfreighting that wouldn't be economically feasible without that bird.

Private pilot?

Actually, I hear he was an pretty outgoing guy. Not that private at all. Private people become serial killers, not pilots. :-)
