I take the subway to Brooklyn all the time, this is scary.

It would be a piece of cake for terrorists to kill 1000 commuters in the NYC subways. All they need is a few committed Johny Jihads. Pick a crowded under the river subway at peak rush hour. Put bad guys in the front and back of the trains with backpacks and set them off in the middle of the tunnel. They could blend in as tourists who routinely take the subways with huge backpacks or suitcases. It would be far worse than the Spain bombings. No exists from the tunnel. No air. No escape. Nightmare stuff. People would be terrified to take the subways ever again.
I'm sure the NYPD and MTA have gone over this scenario and the reached the same conclusion. You cant defend against this other than very agressive counter terrorism. That means stopping them before they come to the US. Once they are here and are determined to attack there is little to stop them.
