For the first time in nearly a decade, more people moved out of San Diego County last year than moved here from other U.S. locales and economists say the trend could continue as local workers find it harder to cope with stagnant salaries, a high cost of living and skyrocketing home prices.
In the past week, several major employers, including Intel and Capital One Auto Finance, announced plans to transfer hundreds of workers out of the region.
Although each company had its own reasons for moving, some – most recently the 135-employee kelp harvester International Specialty Products – cited the growing cost of operating in San Diego County as a reason for leaving the area.
Also, corporate relocation specialists say the area's high costs are making it increasingly hard to find newcomers to replace the companies that are departing.
"Employees, especially if they're not executives, are finding it harder to move here when a company relocates," said Barbara Brokaw, director of relocation services at ERA Eagle Associates Realty in Carmel Valley. "We deal with people who come to San Diego to interview for a job, but when we tell them about the area, they often find that their salaries are not commensurate with what they're looking for in a house."
In fiscal 2004, 16,083 people moved out of San Diego County, while 15,470 moved in from other cities in the United States, according to data recently released by the California Department of Finance.

Good. Kalifornia can stand to lose some electoral votes.
Hope they go to ID and not WA or OR. The latter states are bad for business. ID is business friendly.
What happens when you create a business-hostile environment?
Interesting how these articles never seem to mention the deterioration in the quality of living and crime as a reason for leaving a city.
Well, ID is more business-friendly than WA or OR, but both of those states are majorly more business-friendly than CA--so it's a matter of degree.
Such a shame. San Diego et all is one of the most beautiful places we visit. I can really understand how a person would fall in love with the place.
But the price of a gallon of milk will scare you to death, and I don't even THINK about looking at the real estate section of the newspaper when we go there.
Friend of ours who lives there says that houses that were originally built in the 1950's to accommodate middle-class and non-commissioned officers, now sells for about $500K. They're native Californians and are established. They said they could not--despite owning their own successful business--move to California now and become property owners.
As I said, such a shame.
And the red states get redder. I was one of these California refugees in 2001. By the next census the power will be moved away from the coasts. If those ridiculous gun and bullet laws they have been mulling become law, look for a stampede.
I just hope the voters who are leaving Kalifornia, after fouling their own nest, stay out west somewhere. Washington is nice - - the place is already in the toilet so they couldn't do much more damage with their Democrat votes there.

We moved our corp office / warehouse from Commerce to Las Vegas in December. Bought a building at $38 a foot vs $70 a foot in Calif. Took 6 very good employees...left the other 95 in Calif to fend for themselves.
Didn't move because of housing moved because of:
1.) the quality of personnel is better and cheaper
2.) No income tax / No inventory tax
3.) Workmans Comp 1/4 of the cost than in Calif
4.) No freeway traffic
5.) Many other Calif mandates and regulations to numerous to list
Housing is about 2/3 or better than the cost in Calif.
Not a chance. We have a net population gain as immigrants, legal and illegal, flood in. Great trade. Skilled high-paid taxpayers leave, unskilled and low-paid tax consumers replace them.
There's a lot moving down to Florida, but in September we have a new law coming into play that allows us to defend ourselves and open fire if someone becomes hostile in a public area.
So when you visit after September, make sure that you don't say anything in public that sounds like "TAX" for heaven's sake... ; )
San Diego County's unemployment rate for April, 2005 was 4.0%.
The more people who move out, the better my commute to work! It currently takes me 10 minutes from my home near Sea World to my office near Balboa Park.
I thought I had it sweet when it took me 5 minutes to get from my house to the building where I did my military work. Now it takes me 15 seconds to commute from my bedroom to my upstairs office.
Aye. My son recently sold his 4 houses and moved to Utah. Loves it there, bought 4 times the house for 1/4 the price and banked the rest.
You have to look at it from the eyes of government employees. Taxpayers although providing money don't require government services like police arrest, court bookings, jailers, social service, WIC, public housing and so forth. In order to grow the major industry, government, you need people who require the services. Poor, illegals are the best. Plus they vote Democrat.
Quit looking at this from your point of view.
California might lose a few, but the Democrats stand to pick up more than they lose. Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado are getting closer to voting Democrat with the influx of leftists from California.
And, lest we forget, San Diego has become an illegal alien $hithole.
