Depends on their looks and roots. A trust fund helps.

Part of it is ego on the part of parents. "Look, we've created a world that's 100% safe! Our cars have airbags."

From three or four years old, children should be taught some basics of safety and how to protect themselves, like "windmilling" etc.

I agree about the chaperones. I started griping about those early on, but most people informed me that chaperones weren't there to chaperone. (Then why are they there? I still don't understand that.)

I just hope other kids heed the lessons in this tragedy

Fat chance! This is not the first time and will not be the last unfortunately. However, we have not heard what actually transpired at this pont.

I agree with you about males .....they need to protect themselves , mostly from themselves, but in general, from impulsiveness .......

I think the main problem is that men nor women view their sexuality as a gift from God...sacred, and to be cherished.....

our view of sexuality in this country is "do whatever feels good" no matter what.......

I always liked the ideas of "Promise-Keepers because I think it pushes the idea of men having pride in their God-given sexuality and its responsibilities as well....

It wasn't a school trip. Odds are that there were no signed papers with the "chaperones." The "chaperones" were probably just parents who did not trust their own children to go alone because their own children might get plastered and end up dead.

I went on a senior trip with no chaperones. Some of my classmates were escorted by their mothers. I know I could have gone to any of those parents if I had needed, but they were only there because of their pretty, naive
daughters.

You are most welcome! :o)

Some Web sites showed it pronounced row-hip-nole.

What is the consensual drinking age in Aruba?

18, to do anything. Drink, gamble & vote too.

Chaperones are there in name only; and want to have their own good time. Appears they are under no obligation to keep an eye on the group.

That's more to my point. You go on vacation to party and have a good time. Bad choices or not, you don't expect something like this to happen. More to the point, why didn't she stick closely with her group of classmates? Was she forced to leave, or did she leave voluntarily? If she was forced to leave, you can't blame the teen. If she left voluntarily, well that was a mischievous and poor choice.

So you think it will help to say she wasn't in the least bit responsible for the choices she made? That's just nuts. We're not blaming the victim. We're saying that if she had exercised better judgment, she'd likely still be alive. Why is that wrong to say? It's the truth. The liberals have gotten hold of far too many people and convinced them that none of us ever have any responsibility for our lives. "The government will protect us."

Johnny7 HAS taken home drunken women on many occasions... but makes it a point NEVER to share.

Check the diction of your new "friend." Is he or she inarticulate? Does he have tattoos? Piercings? Does he have an idiotic haircut or dopey clothes? Does he use offensive words or phrases? Leave it alone if you see these danger signals, and remember that Ted Bundy was one clean cut fellow. Stay away from drug users, too, not because all drugs are intrinsically dangerous, but because those who take them travel in dubious company.

you kidding?....girls can be the fastest friend dumpers in the world when it comes to petty arguements and boys....

maybe the reason Natalee didn't go with the other kids and why she was upset in the bar is that she had a fight with one of her girlfriends......

Thank you. I also pray for her and for her family- it's heartbreaking to think of what they must be going through now.

Couldn't find a suitable link, there are plenty of books and experts that have explanations. I think The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift describe it.

Basically if a kid is being touched, either grabbed or otherwise, if they windmilling their arms and screaming the attacked will usually flee. Try grabbing a wrist of a kid who is windmilling, it's impossible. Also, the screaming and motion attracts attention.

Local cops will almost always come to a PTA meeting etc and give a child safety course for free.

That's another point. IF the chaperones are supposed to look after these kids, then WHY didn't they give the kids a reasonable curfew and room check that night? They were after all, supposed to be leaving the island that morning.

It's not just the kids who should be learning a lesson, it's for the future chaperones and parents as well.

And a 17-year old who swims in shark-infested waters should have been taught (or figured out) long ago to beware of sharks. Or that avoiding the water altogether is a far smarter and safer alternative.
