Lifetime award for Star Wars man
George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars movies, is to receive a lifetime achievement award on Thursday from the American Film Institute.
Director Steven Spielberg will present the prestigious honour at a gala ceremony in Los Angeles.
Star Wars actors Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford will pay tribute to the film-maker alongside previous recipient Tom Hanks.
Last year's winner of the AFI's highest award was the actress Meryl Streep.
"George Lucas is a master storyteller, but he is first and foremost a moving image pioneer," said Sir Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI's Board of Trustees.
Inspiration
"He has advanced the art of the moving image like few others, and in the process has inspired a new generation of film-makers around the world.
Lucas said he felt honoured to be recognised for "doing what I love to do".
"I'm proud to be counted among such an extraordinary group of people whose lives are dedicated to the art of making movies," he said.
The AFI Life Achievement Award was established in February 1973.
Other recipients include Robert De Niro, Barbra Streisand and Clint Eastwood.
I doubt he would have gotten this were it not for his not-so-subtle digs at Bush and the Republicans present in Ep. III
Mark Hamill ought to curse Lucas for being the birth/death of his acting career.
I don't care for his politics, either.
But, IMHO, he deserves the award . . . big time. Hopefully, the fanfare will stick to the great entertainment his films have brought my way.
He was a master story teller, until Jar-Jar

What a crock!
I've been a SW fans since the sixth grade.
Recently I sat through Ep. III.
Even with the spectacular effect, at points I found the movie extremely boring!
What lifeless characters!
Have you seen ROTS? There weren't any digs at Bush.
Your opinion of ROTS is in the minority.

Worst. Screenwriter. Ever.
The same ass-kissing director who reportedly came out of Revenge of the Sith "weeping" tears of joy.
Retch!
Spielberg is just as good as Lucas in his own right. Speilberg doesn't have to ass kiss anybody.
Actually Mark Hamill went on to have a good career in voice acting and acting in video games (Wing Commander series). You may have heard one of two of the voices he can use and not know it. Mark Hamill voiced the Batman The Animated series Joker from all the way back to 1992. And continued playing the Joker all the way into the Batman Beyond Movie and the Justice League series.
To this day, the Joker laugh that Mark Hamill can do still sends chills running down my spine.
I saw it. It's speculative. People put political digs in movies all the time. BTW, I gave the film 3 stars out of 4.
Yup,

Not according to a quick survey I just did!
(and yes, I am currently by myself... but that's beside the point)
:0
Well, maybe...but it'd be a lot more believeable if he could write dialogue!
