A group of citizens calling themselves the Minutemen patrols the border looking to stop illegal immigrants from entering the United States. Mexico's president, Vicente Fox, states that Mexican migrant workers in the U.S. are "are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do."
Meanwhile, many Republicans think President George W. Bush's guest-worker program either mocks the law or is unworkable, while in California a frustrated Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger blurts out, "Close the borders in California and all across Mexico and the United States."
Illegal immigration is again in the headlines, but the debate isn't going anywhere. Instead, all the tired controversies are again being aired.
Some believe illegal immigration is a win-win bargain: An impoverished Mexico obtains critical dollars, while job-hungry America receives industrious unskilled workers.
Critics counter that millions of illegal workers undermine the sanctity of the law, and only abet a corrupt Mexican government that uses remittances to avoid needed reform.
Both sides agree that when newcomers arrive legally from Mexico in the thousands, rather than unchecked in the millions, these immigrants become among our best American citizens.
The politics are by now surreal. Those of the corporate right want cheap labor. So they join the self-interested multicultural left in politics, journalism and academia who don't mind seeing a growing presence of unassimilated and dependent constituents.

Its called the New World Order the fusion of Lefty fantasy and Rightist corporate hustling, and VDH is describing a symptom.
Ping!
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
IMHO, when Mr. Hanson chose to repeat the charge, "Those of the corporate right want cheap labor.", he confused the taking of cheap shots at corporations with the achievement of editorial "balance".
Does anyone REALLY think that "corporations" have hired "cheap" illegals to pilot our aircraft, build our bridges, write our wills or manage our money?
Does anyone REALLY think that those "cheap" illegals who assemble every morning in "no-hassle-zonas" are being picked up for day-labor "corporate" jobs?
I would applaud the efforts of any researcher who would investigate the discrepancy between the reportedly large number of unemployed "unskilled" Americans and the reportedly large number of employed "unskilled" illegals.
But I think that Mr. Hanson's un-documented shot at American corporations is "out of line".
The ones with faked documents are working in corporations. No, they aren't piloting aircraft, to use your disingenuous example.
I guarantee many of the non-English-speaking people working, say, chicken processing plants, are illegals.
Who does the farm work, janitorial work, landscaping, construction work, meatpacking, etc.? There are indeed lots and lots of illegals that are hired by corporations. It saves them a great deal of money. They almost never get caught, and when they do, the penalties are minimal.
Why, therefore, would corporations not use illegals whenever they are capable of doing the job?
Not according to a Fox News poll.
Even so, a 62 percent majority, including almost equal majorities of Democrats (65 percent) and Republicans (62 percent), favors allowing illegal immigrants who have jobs in the United States to apply for legal, temporary worker status
Dare I say "baby boom"? These millions are bound to have kids, who'll need even more services (and impact the environment, economy, politics, culture, etc.)
Take whatever concerns you have now, and double them, at least.
Dare I say natvie born Americans have a million abortions a year.
Unfortunately, also true.
It's sad really - I can't think of a polite way to say something like: "somebody else's chickens coming home to an otherwise empty roost."
Please consider for a moment if you might not be projecting your own economic propensities onto innocent "corporations".
In my experience, corporate officers prefer to avoid hassles -- including all the "hassles" associated with hiring illegals. Ask yourself, "What employee would risk jail for the sake of increasing earnings for the "shareholders"?"
To support that point, I went looking for a reference to the "Wal-Mart-illegals case" of 2003. In that case, Wal-Mart engaged an independent company to clean floors at some of its stores. Here are some excepts from a report on that case:
"...The so-called "undocumented workers" (employees of a third party cleaning company) were contracted to clean floors at 60 Wal-Marts across the country... The truly hypocritical aspect in this story is the fact that Wal-Mart will now likely face criminal and civil penalties. Granted, some managers at Wal-Mart probably DID know that these were illegal aliens, but so what? If they don't hire them, they get sued for 'discrimination.' If they DO hire them, they're in violation of immigration law. Personally, I can't blame employers for hiring Esses. They simply aren't allowed to ask them if they're here legally or not. If the Vatos flash their phony-baloney ID (which they can now get legally in Mexifornia), then Farmer Joe has no recourse. He can't simply say to himself "Gee, there sure are a lot of Esses applying for work here, and none of 'em speaks a lick of English. I'd better get more proof that they're here legally."
Nope, he has to shut...up... Sure he pays the Esses less than what normal adults with real jobs earn, but the farm jobs were never intended for "heads of households." Back in the "olden days" (1983) American teenagers would pick strawberries (or flip burgers) to earn extra money. Not only did they learn the value of hard work ... they also got some pocket money (and would rarely have to resort to stealing from their mom's purse)... Thanks to concerned Democraps, the law was changed (because teenage boys gettin' their wittle fingers dirty would run contrary to their agenda of Pussification). Nevertheless, I am somewhat grateful to the feds for this "bust," so "thanks." But if you're really interested in finding and deporting illegal aliens (and more importantly, the criminals that encourage them to come here in the first place), let me save you some time. Here are the culprits: The Federal Government, The State of California, Ex-Governor Gay Davis, OHSU, The Oregon Health Plan, The Mexican Consulate, Ed and Lois Smart, La Raza, Crud Bustamante, MECHA, The Racist..."

Added to the VDH ping list. Thanks.
Like a person who has let a melanoma grow on their skin for so long, ignoring it, pretending it doesn't exist while it continues to grow and grow, that the price of "fixing" the malady is now, at the very least, to amputate the arm.
A terrible price to pay for the violation of oaths taken by those granted the public trust. And, as always, it is the common man, not those who have benefited from this blatant disregard for the rule of law, who will pay the price.
The snowball has been rolling downhill for a while now, and is now picking up speed at a terrifying rate.
